Hello everyone,
I am pretty new to this web site but I would like some help if anyone is willing. I have a 55 gal tank With a wet/dry sump. I originally started with an aggressive set up. Now I have the start of a reef tank. And would love to build a refugium any good ideas on how to build a moderate priced one?
Any help would be greatly apprecated.

Here's one I just put under my 55g this past weekend... pretty simple design. All I plan to up grade at this point is the lighting.

That looks nice. my sump looks like this. What im a little confussed on is should I build on to my existing sump or not?If so how would I do that?

nemo lover, IMO I would slowly remove the bio-balls and turn that area into a refug. How big is the bio-ball section?
Roggy, if you mean replacing a can filter with a refug... yes it's not only possible IMHO it's much better to do so.

thanks reefnut
I thought a fugie was supposed to be in a alow flow area if I do that it would be right next to the intake. Wont there be to much flow. Is there a way to put a twenty gallon tank or rubbermaid container on the right side of the sump and have it feed the sump that way ?

Your correct, a lower flow is desired. You can put a rubbermade next to the sump as long as it is higher than the sump and for the overflow... something like this...

When you say under the tank are you refering to a bulkhead? (meaning a pre drilled bottom with fittings...)
If so it will work exactly the same.. You just use the ball valves on either side of the "T" to control the rate of flow so its slower to your refugium. Hope that helps.

Yea all the parts for plumping you need will be at Home depot or Lowes. Also get some thread tape to help preventing drips on your threads at your joints.. You'll be glad you did :)
and placing your refugium under your tank is a perfect out of site location.. It just needs to be lower so natures gravity can do the work :)

is there anything I can do to assure no flooding if the power was to go out? or just make sure the fugie has room for water as well as the sump?

The only problem with this i see is the fact that its draining from the bottom..
I guess as long as you have a piece of PVC inside the tank, and to the height of the water level you wish you maintain it will be ok..
Otherwise it would just empty the displays contents to the refugium and sump if the pump fails..
I would make sure if your using pvc inside the tank to maintain water level, you purchase a perforated screw on cap to make sure snails dont try and do you a favor and clean the bulkhead out.. *grin*
