Need help with my nano

Hi I am new to this posting thing... lol I have been reading on here for a while and finally decided I need some help with my tanks. First and foremost I have not been able to get my nitrates down or my coralline to grow.... I have a JBJ 29 Nano. I have everything in it stock... I originally got this tank from my mom, who got it as a whole set up. Anyway she brought it to me from Indiana in July this year. I have in it:
maybe 15 pounds of live rock (came with)
live sand (came with)
a lawnmower goby -I added
black cucumber-I added
torch coral-I added
fogspawn-I added
purple leather frag-I added
zoas (came with)
candy cane (came with)
a few mushrooms- 2 reds that came with and I recently bought another-not sure what its real name is.
8 hermits I think (red and blue)
4? white turbos (came with)
3 tiger turbos-I added
5 nassarius snails (came with)
2 other types of snail that I'm not sure what they are lol
coral banded shrimp-I added
pepermint shrimp -I added to help with my aiptasia
I think that is it... I'm not home to look at it lol
Tuesday my specific gravity was 1.025 and my calcium was 440 and Ph was 8.3
Anyway my nitrates have been around 15-20 over the last few months and I want to get it down. I know that it is high but all of my frags have been splitting like crazy and I have been afraid to mess with what I have too much to make them angry. But I know they would be happier with the nitrates down. I have been reading on here and it seems like everyone has the general consensus about taking all of the sponges and bioballs out and using Chemi pure, Purigan and Cheato. So I want to switch to that. So on my lunch today I got some cheato and put it in a cup with holes and put it in the second chamber. And I took out all of the sponges. I already had a bag of Chemi pure elite in there so I moved it to the first chamber alone. I didn't take out the bio balls yet. I wanted to make sure it is ok to do that all at once... I read on another post that it could mess with the nitrogen cycle and throw everything out of wack... I don't have my other tank stats but I will post them after I get home. I am due for a water change today and plan on doing a 15gal change this evening. Is there anything I should add to the cheato? I've read that some people put live rock rubble in the bottom of there cup and others do not. And how do I tell if there are pods in the cheato? I didn't see any copepods swimming in the water.... I did however find some in the sponges that I took out of my tank... so if I have them in my tank does that mean they will find the cheato?

I am so sorry to be so long.... I really appreciate any advice! Thanks!

I had a problem with my nitrates for a bit and found out I was feeding too much. I kept doing water changes every week and cut down on the food I feed my tank and they went back to 0.

Not sure if that helps, but good luck.

Welcome to SWF.com Forums.

All your other readings are fine just your nitrates are a lil high...
How often do you do water changes and do you use RO water for top offs?
I think i read that cucumbers are nice additions to tanks but if they do die then they release toxins in the tank...

rock rock rock, wherever you can add it. I have problems with nitrates too, but just relax. I added a HOB fuge, shaving brushes, chaeto, red grac., sea lettuce, clams and cut my feedings to every other day and make my own food. I test my mixed water for nitrates and it is 0. My tank has been running for awhile and sits between 10-20 ppm. I use Salifert and API test kits and yes both give me identical readings. Some nitrates are ok and if everything is doing well, then just try to keep them down the best you can. I too suffered from nitrate anxiety, but no more!!

I do appx an 10 gallon water change every 2 weeks. I get my water from my LFS, and I have tested it with my kits and it tests at 0.
Yeah I will keep an eye on my cucumber he is always all over the place! I really like him.
