Need help with Remora skimmer!

Ok I have a remora skimmer on my tank I know its not the greatest skimmer but it was free and is about all the room I have for a skimmer. I am having a problem with it filling up the cup with just water. I have not ever used one of these skimmers and there was no instructions with it. Any info would be a great help.

it should have a rubber band around the collection cup...slide the rubber band down the cup to raise the cup higher, until you get your desired skimmate.

+1 should have a rubber o-ring or something arround the collection just lower it on the cup so the cup sits higher for a dryer skim. Also mine did the for a week or 2 intill it breaks in. just have patience with it and empty the cup regularly. When it was full of water I just dumped it back into my tank. Soon it will fill up every few days with smelly brown stuff.

ok thanks it did not come with the O-ring do you know where I can get one? Or is there is something else I can use?

I have also drilled the cup and cut the skimmer to allow for the drain fitting on the cup. Are there any other mods that can help this skimmer?

the trouble with drilling the collection cup is that if something goes wrong in the tank, and the skimmer starts overflowing, you'll empty the tank. i would not suggest doing this.
i'm not a fan of the remora/urchin skimmer. the one i had did a very poor job.
i hope yours works better and is quieter than mine.

Yeah but when its free and no money to buy a better one and you are limited on space. Gotta use whatcha got.
I am just trying to make the best out of what I got.

Yeah I hear ya better than no skimmer but they are not the quality I would have expected. Mine works pretty good.Its pulling out alot of gunk. I would have expeced more though. But then I dont have much of a bio load. With a clown chromis and damsil in a 55. So I guess there is not much to skim.

There is an mod you can do I have not tried it but you can replace the pump with a maxi jet 1200. For you right now I would not recomend it intill your skimmer breaks in or else it will just overflow the cup even faster

a few guys on another forum have told me to replace the mag 3 with a mag 5 or mag 7. I thought the smaller remora came with a MJ1200

it does.
maybe if you put a needle wheel pump on it it would work better.

it might, but being spray injection and with no airline going to the pump I don't think it will make that big of a difference.
