Wow, that's a big 'ol chiller there! Looks like your intake filter needs cleaning
I am in the maintenance business and notice those things!

Then there is me... the misfit.

And your right on with the fluctuation comment. THAT'S you issue, not high temp.
Huh?
I think our heater only has an on/off switch because it is homemade.

And I tried raising the light but that's as high as it goes.

Nordy, ok ok I'll clean it.

Kiki, are you saying you have no way to adjust temp on your heater??
if so then yeah, you need a different heater first and foremost.

An MH is for metal halide, which is an option for reef lighting.

Thanks guys. Excuse this dumb question, but why is a heater really important if my tank temp is too high?

Good question! Heaters are often not needed with tanks that use MH lights, or have a lot of pump-generated heat. But, I assumed you were using one.

Go ahead and try the fan but overall 84 degrees is not a concern for me, certainly no reason to panic. I would not recommend ice cubes or frozen bottles.

It is a good question.
You need a heater because...
You halides only heat while your lights are on. If your tank goes up to 84 during the day and drops to 77 at night, that is an 8 degree fluctuation and for corals that is incredibly stressful.
Corals will do fine in 84, they will do fine in 77 but to bounce all over in between is not natural for them.
So you need the heater to bump up the temp while the lights are off.

Thanks everyone.
Yeah because when I wake up it is 78 degrees and by the end of the day it is 84

I would consider that undesirable for sure and would go the heater route
along with fans to try and cool it.

Some more info for you guys. I'm kiki's boyfriend (we're talking about the same tank). The heater has settings for temperatures. I haven't been using it. I find that if I do use it the temp skyrockets. I haven't dialed it in, but i set it to 79 and the temp was still climbing. So i'm guessing the dial is out of calibration or something.
The filtration system(canister filters) and pump are in a cabinet on the side and i think the excess heat from that pump will heat the tank if the fan gets turned off (like when i forgot to turn it back on after cleaning the filter). I turned the fan back on and the temp dropped throughout the day. We'll keep working on getting that heater to work properly and our LFS told us about floating frozen water bottles too. I guess we'll just have to do that. It doesn't help that our house doesn't have AC and has wide fluctuations too.
Also, the lights are CFL and have cooling fans in their housing

LOL welcome to the board.
I would if it was me just get another heater they are fairly inexpensive and it sounds like a cheap regular old heater which eventually will fail. which is what it might be doing now.

Yes get a good heater it's prob the cheapest thing you will buy for a reef tank IMO.
