Need ideas for a logo

So I've been working at this church for like 3 months and they've put me in charge of overhauling the website. It was designed in the late 90's by a professional company and looks good.... for the 90's, that is.
I have been thinking of changing the logo for a while now, and want to design something that is current with the times and shows that we are a progressive, forward-thinking, organic church.
Organic - that's what I've been focusing on. Something elemental.
If you could pic an element to personify a church like ours, what would you choose?

It would help if you told what kind of church. Like catholic, christian etc.

Christian, bible-based church. I also got a few ideas on facebook... Clay or Salt. however, it's still not really what I'm looking for. Both salt and clay are earthy. There's got to be an element out there that is vibrant in color.
