Need Ideas in sumpfuge......

Since I started visiting this site I've decided I need/want a sump, but all the diy's I've seen so far are a to big as I would have to go under the tank. I like the one I saw with the two rubbermaid's ( I have a 14gal. and it barely fits undereneath my tank) any thoughts? I do have a 10gal glass I was thinking of useing for the fuge (what light should I use any way) and the 14gal. for a sump. Does this sound right? Any idea's I just don't want to do something that will turn out to be a great waste of time and money.

But does it matter if one is bigger than the other? And how deep should the bed in both be at about 10gal each ( is 4" too much or not enough)?

Here is a real rough drwing of what I was planning for under my Nano(I have a new design that blows this away):

Broncofish,
Inside the stand it's 47"long 27"high and 16"deep, the doors are only 10"wide and 27"high. I can get a standerd 10gal in w/o much trouble. Think I might try a 15 gal. tall for the sump, and the 10gal for the fuge. My sand bed is only 2" deep. Could/should I add another 45lbs ? And what's this stuff from home depo I keep seeing on the board? OR should I just go with 6"+ on the sump&fuge? I really like Idea you had with the sump&fuge running the length of the tank, stacked one on top of each other, but since the tank been up for something like 7mo+ I think not, but if I get my 200gal dream.......And what's that third thank? K-something with a dosage control? What is the benifit of having one( forgive my ignorance )? How many return pumps should I use, should it be more than 350 gph ?

you know you can do a broomer special with simaler sizes. I wanted a clear container and i ended up getting a tube thats 36x18x15 you just do what you can with the space you have. You want to go big as you can but make sure you have room to work in the sump too.

Hey sadlit'lfish it's never to late to add shelves under your stand, but I also have other plans if your seriuose let me know and I'll e-mail some to ya. As far as room to do work with your fuge/sump, all the work I ever have to do it clean out the strainer on the return pump, and empty the skimmer(when I choose to start running one again, if at all) and clean the glass, everything else takes care of it self. I could be singing a different toon 1year down the road:( but as for right now my system is pretty much maintenance free. Also the Kalkwasser drip is just a way to add top-off water, and dose calcium for the corals.

Also I am starting on building the 29g nanoreef this weekend and I will try to post pics of my progress often

My set-up is nearly the same as the first drawing and it works well so far.
In regards to the second drawing, I would think that it would be a good idea to keep the sand and live rock in the refuge and out of the sump. I believe that the sand and rock could be very problematic/ fatal to the skimmer and return pump.
Especially if the are going to be seperate tanks, might as well keep them that way. Better for the refugium (and its slow flow bugs, etc) and better for the sump and its equipment.
I have about 7-8 gallons/ hour moving through my refuge and several hundred gallons per hour moving through my sump.
Keeping them seperate also gave me room to install a couple of plexiglass baffles in my sump to reduce bubbles going up to my main tank. Works like a charm.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.

I have actually decide that your right zafirablanca. I am going to have a bare bottom, and a bunch of live rock in there(for filtering pruposes)

Thanks Broncofish,
I think I'm going to HD tonight to start pricing out parts. Going to halfta' wait till income tax return anyway, so I can upgrade my lights and get some more LR too.
