Need Some Advice On Large Tank Size Before Major Purchase ...help!

Hi, need some advice from some that have experience with larger tanks. Here are the choices that I need to decide but trying to see positives and negatives of both. This will be a reef tank with about 4 tangs and of course some other fishies. I am looking at a tank that is a 240. The dimensions are 96 length x 24 width x 25 height. I am also looking at a 220 (approx. custom made if I choose this size) to being 72 length x 30 width x 25 height (the width front to back of this tank). Which would be best..wider base for aquascaping? Length is best? I figure the fish have about the same space because the entire tank would be wider on this one giving them room to move around maybe more???? Not sure...need some good 'ol advice!!

Your dimensions listed are almost identicle in surface area...
72X30=2160 on the 220 tank
96X24=2304 on the 240 tank
you getting about 10% more surface area with larger tank but its also 10% larger.
the 220 is slightly better but its all a matter of preference. You can make a more realistic reef scape in the wider tank and it won't take up as much length in your home, but if you have the space that extra two feet in length really looks great! I couldn't decide either so I went with 96X30X24 for a 300 gal total for the best of both. Either option will be good though...just depends on your space.

Will it be a Fish Only or a reef??
If it's going to be a reef I'd go with the 220g because of lighting. Most standard lighting hoods I have seen go upto 72"... it would be cheaper and easier to light up the 220g.
If it's going to be a fish only system I'd go with the 240g because the fish would have more "straight" swimming room... which is a good thing for the tangs.

HI, it is going to be both....reef and tangs. I was trying to justify the shorter length of the 72 inch because I thought the fish would have just as much swim space because they could turn and have wider areas of swim space....to go around in a big almost circle feel than just back and forth, but I am not sure about this...anyone???

I just picked up my custom acrylic tank which is 72"l x 30"w x 26"h which I plan to combine my 125 and 75 gallon into. I think it is going to be so nice to be able to spread out my stuff and still keep it away from the glass. Also lighting is a consideration although it wouldnt be too bad with 8' you would just get two 4' sections which is actually cheaper on shipping and more common than the 72" vho's. I will post and let you know how my does as soon as I get it set up. Carrie

I think that if you plan on getting tha larger spcs. of tangs like Naso, Sohal, or Sailfin then the 8 footer would be best but if you only want the smaller spcs. then get which ever you prefer.
