Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

KerriAnn, trust me, the first one is the hardest and the worst. However sometimes it is the kindest thing you can do. 15 sounds like he has led a good long life. While I have to admit I was concerned when you said he would not eat the cheese, I did like to hear that he is eating Arby's. Now if you want to treat him you could go get him a sandwich from Primanti Brothers.

My dog Star ( why my user name ) died in my arms one night. She was a black lab and I had her from a pup. She was 13 years old. I knew the time was comeing soon and I just tryied to give her back as much love as she had given us over the years. An impossible thing to do. I still miss her after 3 years. All I can say is to do the same and be strong for Buster when you can.
I thougth a lot about putting her down but she could still get up some energy at times to play and then I would see that tail wag and wonder how can I take even a few times of joy that she might have left away. I dont know if it was right or wrong and Im cant say for Buster either. Its hard, I know.
Im sorry this is not cheerfull, really what can one say ? but just think of the good times and tell him Thanks. For everything.

It may not give too much comfort but in hopes to help you. You are not alone, I am sitting here typing this under almost the exact same circumstances you are in. And that is right down to the breed of dog too. Sadie my Beagle just turned 12 yesterday. Ive had her since shes been 8 weeks old, and over the years has been as much as a part of our family as a child. 2 weeks before Thanksgiving she went to the vet for an injured leg that she aquired while jumping on our bed. Upon examination they found a heart murmor so before x rays were done a full cardiac work up was required. Half way through the cardic work up they found a spot on her lung. She went to a specialist to get a CT scan done and it was confirmed lung cancer. Ironic I was in the exact place one year ago to the day to put my lab down from the same disese. There I was hearing that my beagle only had about 2 months to live. I am fairly sure we are down to days maybe a week. She has completly stopped eating and is on a supplement paste, along with a nice dose of Prednisone. She weighed 35 lbs @ thanksgiving now she weighs about 24. Her comfort is my only goal but it is not easy watching her go through this. My thoughts are with you durning this trying time. As pet owners we have a responsibility we must take on but no matter how many times you go through it, it never gets any eaiser.

Think about what you did for that dog. What an incredibly lucky animal to have an owner who loved, protected and cared for him all of his life. You were lucky to have him, but he was lucky to have you too.
All dogs go to heaven… "Someone" will take care of him for you.

Sorry to hear about your dog.As a dog owner I would put him down if he is suffering.I know it not easy to do but I personally would rather put him down humanly then to suffer. Then go get another dog will make it a little easier. My mom had a schnauzer she had for 15 yrs she was out play fetch his favorite past time and when he was running back he had a heart attack and died.My mom was a mess.I told her the dog lived alot better then other dogs and died happy playing ball.So I went and got her another one it seem to make it a little easier on her.

thanks everyone for your kind words and support. we're hoping to take him to the vet tomorrow and put him down. he ate for me friday night but hasn't ate since and we've tried EVERYTHING. we just can't go on anymore like this waiting for him to pass. while it's difficult to say good bye its even harder to watch him struggling for us. i took him out saturday morning and there were 2 deer in my front yard and he couldn't even muster the energy to chase them so i KNOW he's suffering
