Need Some Help

Ok long story short. Used to have a 40 gallon bow salt water tank. When my son was born we needed more room so we down sized to a 25 gallon hex tank and sold the other one. Well since then we have moved and are purchasing back our 40 gallon. I still have quite a bit of live rock in the hex tank, but am unsure what to do to get the 40 gallon bow up and stablized so I can transfer back over. Don't want to buy a buck of live rock that is going to be to much. Have heard about live sand, is that an option? The live rock I currently have is about 3 years old. Thanks for any help you could give.

Could you take a couple of pieces of rock out of the 25 and put it in the 40 to get the cycle started? Once completed you could start to move everything over to the new tank.

In my current tank I have some kind of white stone. I can't remember what that was. Does anyone know and is that better or worse than live sand?
