Hi guys been awile since I have posted. I have to replace my filter on my koi pond need some of your expert advice dealing with a "standpipe gravity fed"
I am building a filter box 8' long 2 wide 2 high. The filter will be open top.
fed by extrenal pump, plumb in from bottom of the box. I want a standpipe that will gravity feed back to the pond. Here is my proplem. I want my standepipe to also be plumb from under bottom but it will go up hill a bit will it work still? my pump is 2400 gph or 40gpm fed with 1.5" pvc to the box, the standpipe I was thinking of 2"pvc. Here is a pic to show my up hill grade from the box to the pond.

Hey Bonita - you should not have a problem with that setup as water will seek it's own level. The only problem would be if there was resistance in the outlet then it could possibly cause a vapor lock and not allow water to flow - but in looking at your diagram the outlet level appears to be substantially below that of the water and should not pose a problem. If you do get a vapor lock you would need to install a vent pipe near the high end of the outlet to release the air. HTH

Thanks a bunch! The water level will be around 22" in the box and the highest the pipe will be 8" on the grade flowing back into the pond.

Hey- I think think there are better ways to filter koi ponds. In my personal opinion, I think you should invest in a "pod" filter. They can be easily back washed and maintained in 5 minutes or so. They can also be buried in the ground away from your pond, up until the handle piece. You'll be glad you have one.
