Need some shark advice

I'm wondering what type of Sharks do well in smaller tanks ie 250-350g tanks. My wife and I checked out an LFS that had a few sharks in a 300g, she really dug it, and I mean really really. She waited till we were home(1hr drive) before she said, hey how much would it cost top set one of those up. I always figure a shark tank was way way out of the question God did she surprise me. I will do more research but hoping you guys could cut the search time down, by offering up some good books on sharks. Of course Splash, and Novice you advice would be greatly appreciated. I already have a UV steralizer laying around, would probably build a big DIY skimmer, and would run A pretty big sump for the skimmer $ heaters, I would also run a 55g refugium for the extra LR, and DSB that I would not have in the main tank. Any opinions welcome

broncofish,
I'm glad to hear your wife supports if not indulges your habit. If you like horn sharks, you might consider a Port Jackson. I agree with Jim27 that's a must have book. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Are you interested in rays as well, or just sharks? I really like epaulettes and horns. I'm not sure about horns, but epaulettes and bamboos will breed in captivity, and it is possible they could get it on in your tank. You'll want a bed of fine sand so it won't scrape their stomachs. Also, you'll need to make sure there is no unstable rockwork. Shark's root a bit, and can easily topple rockwork and injure themselves. Bo

Good luck! it looks like your already going in the right direction by PLANNING it first! I miss my sharks!! But they are doing great in a 1000 gallon aquarium in a upscale hotel here in orlando. I need to get some pics of their new home. I am swaping out some elbow grease setting up a in wall for an aquarium shop for a new tank!! its been wierd not having one!

Thanks for the replies everybody. Yeah I was pretty much just thinking sharks for now, the port jacksons look cool. Never thought I would own any aggressives besides my old lionfish....who could of guessed that my wife would like sharks more than me.

Broncofish,
It's 320 gallons. It's 84X36X24 (LXWXH). It's the tank I was going to have you make the sump for. By the way how are your hands doing by now? Besides the Port Jackson, I have an epaullette in another tank. In my opinion you can't go wrong with either. One thing I have found is the epaullette is much more mellow then the Port jackson.

They have a horn shark at the toledo zoo, and that thing is pretty dang big. I would stick with catsharks, bamboos, epaulettes, and rays unless you have a very big tank. I would love to have a port jackson but I think full grown it would look a little cramped. I'm also setting up a 300 soon broncofish.
Fine sand for the substrate is ideal as is keeping everything in the sump possible. Make sure there is no metal in the water, and if you decide to get little baby bamboos try to keep the lights kinda dim. You may also want to keep salinity a little higher, .024 plus.
Don't buy nurse sharks, wobbegongs, shovelnose guitarfish, leopard sharks, unless you know beforehand somebody will take them. They get very big. Blue dot stingrays are supposed to starve easily, but Jim is taking care of one well. Wonder what his secret is? Check out his videos....sweet!!!!

Hey I remember that now, I was working on another one for somebody else when those cysts started bursting. Yeah it is doing better, still can't make a tight fist yet, but After the cast and the blood thinners it is doing a lot better. Thats similar to the tank size we are looking to get. How big do those port jackson sharks get?
Hey tony thanks, I'll check out those videos

broncofish,
I'm told 4 feet in the wild but usually don't get any bigger than 3' in captivity. I'm glad to hear your doing better.

Wow, I want a Port Jackson! How well do Epaulette sharks do? I was going to make ( want to mom said no :p) a 300 or 400g tank. Aggressive tank. What do you feed the Epaulette what other tankmates are there?

I feed my epaullette silversides, krill and squid. Her tank mate is a yellow stingray. This is actually my second epaullette. The first one got spooked and found a 2X3 hole in the tank lid and went carpet surfing. She was about 3 years old and was 22 inches long. I have one now that is about 10 inches long and there are no more holes in my tank lid.

I have never been to the O St. I don't really care for Capital but, I have a big store credit there. I gave them a few giant FW fish. Have you been to The Aquarium in concord yet? Not as big as capital but, much much better.

There are two species of wobbegongs that will go in a 300 gallon tank. The Japenese Wobby and the Wards wobby. Both are difficult to get in the hobby thou.
I agree with Jim27 buy the book aquarium sharks and rays.
