Need something to prevent splashing in overflow box

Overflow box water level is about 3 inches lower than where the water comes through the top of the overflow box, splashes like all heck. What can I put in there to pour the water more softly? Thanks!

I always used a sponge cut to tightly fit in the spot towards the top and it would run through it instead of splashing someone else may have another idea though.

raise the level in your overflow? i know that you want to hear this lol but you'd have to cut the pipe in your overflow, put a couple couplings in with a longer piece of pipe, and raise the level the water goes down at.
i like mike's idea better...

Yea cuz the pipe was built in before the box, so it doesnt move lol. What kind of sponge? And will that cause any other problems/

I found that the top of the pipe can come off. Im thinking about adding a couple inches of pipe to increase the height... will this solve the problem? Its a durso standpipe btw. Next to the gurgling problem if that works

Raising the pipe, minimizing the path the water has to travel in the overflow, will reduce the splashing, and as far as gurgling, does your stand pipe have a vent hole in the top of it?

I went and bought the pipe and fittings this morning. Going to add a couple inches of height. Yes it has the vent hole, but I think its large at 3 quarter inch. Should I cap this and drill a smaller hole?

I take the long return pipe out and cover the overflow with a strainer at the bottom. One can also put eggcrate in the bottom. Then I fill the overflows with these 1 and a half inch bioballs and scrunch up some micron filter pads on top of that and they are a couple of inches from the water falling through the overflow so there is not much sound at all. Ever week or two I take the micron filter rags out and put them in the washing machine by themselves with about a cup of fragrance free bleach to clean them. Directly out of the washing machine I put them in a container of fresh water for a few minutes with a couple of capsful of Aqua Safe chlorine/chloromine remover and then put them back in the overflows. Makes a great wet/dry filter.
I never have to clean my bioballs because they are very large and do not trap any wastes. The manager at the LFS says that these big blue balls are purchased in bulk by the manager and are really the same ones used in human waste systems whatever that means. Anyway, mine do not collect any waste products like smaller ones might. I do this and do not need a wet/dry in the sump thus giving me more room down there for other things. You know the wasted space in the overflows is great for a wet dry. Don't know why more people don't use the space. My new 190 gallon that came this week to replace my 90 gallon has two overflows each 1 foot by 6 inches that are being rigged to be wet/drys like I did in my old 90 gallon with only had the one overflow. Good luck, Lesley

Scotty37, not to steal your thread, but I am building a Durso....can anyone tell me how tall it has to be? I have a 30" tall tank? Thanks..
Also Scotty, what I was recommended on the hole to get some of those small ball valves that you use on airline tubing to give control of how much air comes in...I found them at Home Depot for about $6.50 yesterday and is what I will be doing on mine....this is what I am talking about....they sell some threaded ones at Home Depot though.

Thanks I am in the process of moving, so I haven't glued anything together...but managed to put the top portion of my durso together, i'll take a picture at my friend's house...I gave him my old camera, as I have a new one waiting for me in San Antonio...woooo hoooo....i'll be back within the hour to post what it looks like.

No, I will not be able to test this for a very long time. I am in the process of moving down to Texas from Kansas City, and won't have a tank to test it out in. I have seen pictures of this before on someone else's tank and a couple of folks around here (locally) say it work. So without testing it, I take their words.....On paper, the concept makes sense, instead of having a hole drilled, the valve is in place and you have manual control of how much air comes in.

ha ha ha....too funny...but, yeah....please do and thanks.
Although, this will not help with the splashing noise.....this should help out with the gurgling......the splashing could be solved by elongating your stand pipes or trying the sponge deal...
good luck.

Well I found exactly what you have, but the fitting at the top of my pipe was too large for it, so I ended up having to construct my own with a

[hr]
and valve on each... more than I wanted to have to do, especially in size, but should have the same principle... we shall see

yeah mine was a little smaller...I couldn't find a 1/4" reducer....at least not at home depot...so what I did use some busted a$$$$$$ ingenuity....I used that teflon tape and taped the hell out of the threaded side (3/8") of the valve, so it wouldn't go in to the 1/2" reducer.....then I siliconed the crap out of inside of the reducer....and shoved that thing in there with all my might and then took any silicon that was covering the passage on the inside...well needless to say, that thing is rigged and it is air TIGHT ....
OOOPS, I guess I missed that part when I showed you the pictures huh???? LOL
