Need Tips for Protecting the Filter Intake, "sea anemone was nearly killed"

I could really use some tips on how to protect my sea anemone from the filters intake vent. I am sooooo mad, I get home from work yesterday and my sea anemone is all sucked up to the intake. I felt soooo bad because a bunch of his tentacles got ripped off and some of his foot was sucked off. I got him off the intake and he found a new spot and looks like he is feeding and trying to get back into shape. How can I prevent this, without causing problems with the flow rate of the filter???

Its a fluval 404. It has a fairly small intake vent. About 1.5 inches long by .75 inches wide.

Cut a sponge and fit it over the intake. I had to do this for all of my powerheads.

Might I suggest using a small piece of fiberglass screening material to cover it rather than a sponge? Only because the intake is so small that a sponge will probably clog and restrict flow fairly substantially. Just my .02 as usual.

I agree with paul.
A sponge may restrict flow too much - and will have to be cleaned often.
Maybe get some acrylic sheets, and cut/glue to make yourself an Anemone Guard ??
Drill a ton of holes in the acrylic box you fabricated.
Then rig up a decent collar glued to the top of this guard, that could be attached to your intake tube - and still be removable.
You may be able to discontinue using the "standard" intake strainer too.
not sure ?

this may sound very simplistic, but i jam one bio-ball onto the intake of all my powerheads.i've never had anything sucked in.
