From what is available on this site what do you guys recommend for a good crew. I don't want crabs but might be interested in a cucumber or two. I need things for substrate, glass, and LR. I have plenty algae that I can't seem to get a handle on. Its a 46 bow, reef. I need hardy stuff too. Seems like snails die in my tank.
I need some hungry critters to clean this crap up. Thanks

Well if you can't keep snails and don't want crabs that really leaves out the bulk of most clean up crews. Those are the hardy ones, I personally wouldn't get a cucumber as when it dies it can release toxins in your tank. Not sure that nudibranch are as hardy as snails so I'm kind of at a loss.
If snails die and you have plenty of algae it sounds like water issues to me though.

If you have live rock, you have slugs; they are a type of snail. They will multiply and they are free. I didn’t buy snails for 3 years when I first started.
What have you got against crabs? Hermits are the best brown algae eaters, for green algae try a lawnmower blenny.

I run my tanks at 78-82 and I have no problems keeps snails. Buying any type of animal to solve a problem in a tank is wishful thinking most of the time. The owner CAN always be the best clean up crew.

My temp is a little high, prob around 80. Also don't get me wrong, I want snails I just said they die. Im asking for recommendations on a type of snail. As for crabs I don't like them because they attack my snails, and eat them. Thats a little annoying. As of right now I have zero clean up crew, I need something. Nudibranch looks pretty interesting and are on sale here. might give it a try

Cerith snails, nassarius, astrea...all good....Mexican Turbo...great for algae
Nerite snails....great on glass. If you have hair algae...emerald crabs and sally lightfoots are great...
80 is a good temp IMO

I've been told that the reason the crabs kill the snails is so they can take thier shells because you didnt provide the crabs with bigger shells to grow into.

I don't like crabs either. They are snail killers. So either I choose snails or crabs to go in my tank... snails aren't opportunistic so I go with them.
The temp of the tank can be on the high side depending on what type of snails you keep. Do you have any pictures of shells of the deceased. Commonly sold snails from seemingly repeatable dealers list coldwater snails as warm water. They belong in cold water. Period. You won't get very long out of them in warmer water. Snails like Margarita snails and some turbos.
Lettuce nudis favour byropsis.... they don't do so much for the standard hair algae.
But we have to get to the bottom of why your snails are dying before you extend to chices that aren't as hardy.
What are you nitrates?
Do you buy your snails from the same place all the time. Do you have an option of buying them elsewhere? Sometimes the death of the snails aren't on us at all even though they die in our tanks. They are the most abused critter in this hobby on their travels to get to our vendors. It's a shame they aren't treated with more respect. But sometimes our tanks are the "final straw".

Ah yes, I agree... well, not with the sally because I know nothing about them. I was talking about the hermit crabs.
