Neptune Systems Apex controller questions

Hello all,...
I am about ready to drop some cash on my tank and I was wondering if someone more knowledgeable than I could step in and give me some direction?
I want a controller for my tank - something upgradable and something that has some really cool features. I was looking at the Apex FULL unit as the main controller for my tank.
The real question is...
Is it really worth it? Is it just another toy to impress guests or is it something that REALLY helps with maintenance and all around tank chores?
What are your experiences?

Can't help ya with the experience thing. But what I want to know is, is it worth it to you? I'd love to be able to spend a lot of time in maintenance and keeping up with the needs of a hard core coral tank. But the fact is for someone like myself who unfortunately still actually has to work for a living, coupled with family or personal life it's a tough task keeping up with a reef tank from my experience. I can dream of a day where I'm semi-retired though when I can truely devote a much more appropriate amount of time in keeping up with water quality, creating charts and tracking progress. They don't call it a marriage for nothing. So for someone like me who has a busy schedule the majority of the time I can see how a controller would be a worth while investment. And if I had the choice I'd probably shoot for an apex.
Shawn, should be chiming in soon. :)

I'll bite.....you know I like toys, and I'm considering 1 myself as you know. A necessity....Probably not, but can make life easier in my mind. I came from the old school of power strips, and then trying to jam timers into the power strips from my lighting....A real PITA if you ask me....

We'll try to look at it from a couple different angles....Initial cost between the Apex, the lite, and Profilux.....Bottom line Profilux is probably the most upgradeable controller out there as long as your dealing with the Profilux III.....With that said the starter package starts right around $1300-$1400. That's a hefty chunk of change, and does have a lot of cool features, but it boils down to most of us would never really use 1/2 of what's there because of the added cost of probes and such....Look at a DO probe....$499.00
Anyways, you take the Apex full vs the Lite.....The Lite gets you in the door a little easier cost then the full blown, but I think it stops there.....The Lite and full version are setup from the get go to handle PH probes.....Lets say somewhere down the road Seth you add another tank to the house....Nice you can use the Apex and monitor both....Well where the Lite is short (in my terms) this is where it starts costing....You have to buy a module to hook up another PH probe where as if you had purchased the Full you just need the PH probe and up and running......Lets say you want to run ozone at some point down the road....Again the Lite would need the module plus the ORP probe whereas the Full is geared to go you just need a probe......
The biggest kicker I see is the VDM port.....Come on....we all run some sort of PH's in our systems. With the Lite you have to purchase the VDM module, to hook them to the controller, whereas again the Full has 4 already on board the unit.....Those same VDM ports could be utilized for your LED lighting as well....Again Seth your talking about getting either Vortech or Tunze and LEDS.....You still have the added expense of the VDM module.......
I'm a Neptune person....I've owned an AquaController II and the AquaController III and you know I've had the Profilux as well.....Profilux IMO isn't super easy as you know.....A nice toy though.....

We have one. Worth every darn penny!
I can monitor my tank from 12 hours away! My husband and I recently went on vacation. While opening the apex app on the phone to check the tank, we noticed the ph was reading low, checked the ca reactor and realized it was not acting correctly and wasn't turning off. It was releasing too much CO2 into the tank. We were able to turn off the ca reactor with the flick of a button and the tank was fine until we could get back home and see what was going on.
We've also turned on/ off heaters while away, etc. it's worth it

Thanks buddy....I'm a slow tonight....I'm with you on the Apex.....Seth I think you should bite the bullet, pull the trigger and go full Apex....By the time you buy the module to run your Tunzes and your LEDs the price is about the same......Heck the VDM module that you'd have to purchase if you bought the Lite version is going to set you back $100 today.....That's today's prices and just as we see everyday those prices won't be that in 6 months or a year.....Look at the price skimmers have jumped since the new year.....Reef Octopus I think I heard $30-$40 increase, but no product improvement....Just cost of labor and materials......So just with the added $100 module, your about even....Then if you want to run an extra PH probe or run ozone you'll need and ORP probe, so now your looking at another $85 for a PM 1 module, plus whatever probe you needed to add on.....Your behind the game somewhat IMHO......
I agree with hectic lifestyles a controller is a "perk", but also could be piece of mind.....Imagine coming home to a floor full of water or the wife calling you about it....Hmmmm at least with the Apex or a controller you could set up a waterbug sensor and the Apex would send you an email or text something was amiss......Better yet the tank is running warm the alarm goes off again.....The temp is high, wouldn't it be nice to see what your temp is on your phone....Yes you can control the Apex completely through your Iphone.....You determine you had a heater malfunction, so you shut the heater down till you get home.....Or better yet the tank is running warmer than usually and it's super hot outside....Ahhhh let me shut the lights off to cool it off or better yet let me back my lighting schedule back a bit.......

Heck I even plan to hook my exhaust fan in the fishroom to the Apex......I'm even envisioning a flat screen mounted beside the tank just to monitor and graph my tank.....

Wow, thanks for all the responses.
Tommie Lynn, - Thanks for letting me know your experiences with the product. It certainly does sound like it is extra insurance for my investment. With all of the features and controls that this unit has, I think it would give me a little peace of mind while I'm away. I am gone a lot from my home - at least 8-12 hours a day, and sometimes longer on the weekends. It would be nice to finally be able to have some control.
2Quills - thank you for your response. I think it would definitely be something to have since I am gone from home so often. A little peace of mind goes a long way.
Acrylic - Thank you for your really detailed response. I think going with the FULL version would probably be my best bet as well right now. Prices are seeming to go up a lot right now - and I'm sure that I should probably invest in the unit pretty soon. I also think your right to suggest buying the full version over the lite because of having to buy the extra modules and what-nots, so it would be cheaper in the long run.
Since I do want multiple tanks and the apex unit can run multiple tanks - I think I will go with the full version. Thanks for the recommendations.

You definitely won't be disappointed. We have it running multiple tanks as well. More than once, having that app on our phone has saved us from disasters.

I finally gave in and bought a Apex controller yesterday. I am also at work alot. I do not have a sump but a HOB AquaC Remora plus. That being said, my parameters need the redundancy. I will be utilizing a tunze universal 3155 top off system with my apex controller. Another big deal is.. i have had extremely bad luck with heaters. I had a very expensive tank crash by making the mistake of putting it all on the line with a $50 heater. The heater failed the same day my central heat and air went out.
Sooo That being said. If you value your tank do what i just did yesterday and buy a little more assurance.

I bought one. I like it a lot. I have the apex jr. Lots of reassurance. Although, i would have liked to get the lite version so i wouldnt have to buy the pm1 module for the pH probe. Im also disappointed that the unit doesnt have a built in wireless adapter but you have to buy a specialized "game adapter" for it. Which means even more money. In the end, i think its worth it but i should have invested my money into the bigger unit to begin with.

Seth.....Heads up buddy!!!!!!! Even the full Apex isn't internet ready or whatever you want to call it.....I still had to purchase the gaming adapter.....You could always hard wire the unit if you choose, but I don't want 50-60ft of cable always draped across my floor......In all honestly you won't find any controller exactly plug and play wireless unless you go Profilux III top of the line deal, but your also talking more than double what a full Apex costs.......

I'm going to kinda luck out with the internet connection.. my internet module is withing 3 feet of the tank so i plan on stapling it along the base of the floor.

We have our modem and router about 8-10ft away and his the wires inside the molding around the bottom of the room. This way it's off the floor (2") and is not hanging all over the room.
