Maybe 60 w in total.
Wishful thinking I think. The wattage is most likely marked on the bulb. This is critical information as it will let you and us know what types of inhabitants your tank can keep.

Didn't find anything... I live in Canada.
craigslist dot org not com
what is 13 canadian dollars equivalent to in USD these days?
I was quoting USD. The most expensive rock here at LFS for premium rock is $10/lb USD

i think 50/50 arent that good. get one daylight and one actinic
it would give the tank an even spread of lighting versus a 10,000k on one end and an actinic on the other... the tank would look ghetto like that.
I'm just sayin this is the lesser of evils... I'd recommend him to get a T5HO or HQI setup, but not everyone has money.

He could get a cheaper T5HO setup that would work well for him without breaking the bank or his electricity bill. I think the shimmer of HQI is AWESOME.

on a 40gallon, a 250w MH is a much better idea. especially with a 16 or 18inch height.

wow! rotary you want him to waste money. i think a 150w is ok.
dude.. in relation to wpg for comparing MH to MH... a 150 over a 40g that is 16-18inches tall aint sheeit. thats less than 4wpg. A 250 is alittle over 6wpg. I run a 150w over my 20long which is only 12inches high... think about it... 6inches height difference is a big deal especially when you have to hang the light higher than usual to get coverage over the entire tank (using a light designed for 2x2 footpring over a 3 foot tank.) 250w is definitely the right choice. Understand now?

Minor Updates!
Now I'm skimming my 10 gal tank with a Jebo 182 II, it has a 528G/H pump! That's like 26.4 times what I need! lol Anyways, I had a good deal on it. The water has cleared up, NH3/NH4 are lower than 0.6 and NO2 is around 0.1. Lighting is a 40W fluo-compact bulb immitating daylight. I replaced the bio-media by some chaetos.
By the way, I would like someone to I.D. the red stuff on my Tonga live rock please!
One more thing, what kind of substrate should I buy? Sugar fine white sand or Red Sea reef base(they are ball shaped).

Now I just got 4 soft corals, don't know what they are. Added some substrate from Red Sea! It rocks! And got a clam!
I'm still skimming... And the gel super glue with cyanoacrylic doesn't make my corals stay put, I think to much mucus!
Gonna order a 400W 14 000k MH HID set in a week for my coral frag tank but meanwhile what kind of light should I get?
Pics coming in few hours!
