Hi guys, I am glad i found this website and helpful people. Hopefully you guys can help me out as i start. I just got out of the army and moved to alabama from california where I was stationed. Well lets get into it i bought this 100g tank with a lot of fresh water stuff like pumps and lights and rocks and other stuff for $20.00 it also came with a 60g tank but i gave it to a friend in california because i had no room on my uhaul.
I have built a fish tank stand for the fish tank. I have also bought live sand and salt to mix water to start my tank, but i want to make sure i have the correct filtration system and i am guess i will need to build a sump pump before i start. Anyone willing to help me out and give me some direction?

it has a glass divider inside the tank and inside the divider there are 2 holes about 2-3 inches in diameter at the bottom

Yes, you will need to set it up with a sump. How much of a budget are you on? They must have used the 60 gallon as the sump, did it come with a sump pump? any plumbing with it? What kind of tank are you going to set up? Reef, fish only with life rock (FOWLR)

budget is not really a problem i just need to know what to buy would a 30g be good for a sump tank and i would like to have coral and fish it just came with basic lights and 3 big pumps im not sire how much each on can handle but im guessing 50g each but the drill holes on the tank look like it would be easy to set up a sump pump but im just not exactly sure how to setup a sump like what is needed
im guessing having a tank underneath with a filter in it with a return pump i guess i dunno

The bigger the sump, the more room you will have for things like heaters, skimmers, a refugium. 30 gallon is pretty small for 100 gallon tank. If you drain is 2, 2" holes you can handle a large return pump. At minimum I would suggest a 40 gallon breeder tank.

Just a suggestion to make sure that is where you want your tank before you fill it cause you will never want to move it. I am thinking there is a possibility the sun on the window could heat up the tank if you don't put darker curtains on, but I couldn't be sure of that, that is not a problem where I live.

yes i understand what you are saying and curtains would not be a problem or moving the tank hehe i am not to the point where i can fill it up yet like i said i have to build the sump first

the shelf is just a piece of plywood i can cut out one side and give my self 27 inches from top to bottom inside the stand as of right now i have 17 inches from the shelf to the top inside that might be enough room to work with if not the shelf will be cut

ok i got my design for my sump planned out and i am going to stick my PS in there just wondering if i need one for the size of the sump or the size of the fish tank itself

I should have guessed that
, you need one that fits in your sump, but is rated for the size of your tank, or the size of your tank and sump put together, but don't go too large over the size of your tank or your tank won't have enough waste to push bubbles into your collection cup.

Hey is this true of HOB skimmers as well? Don't mean to hitchhike a thread. I didn't know this.
Welcome to the site Ryno368! I don't know anything about sumps, so I'm just along for the ride.

What part are you referring too. Over sizing? I don't know if they make a hob skimmer that would be too large for even the smaller tanks as far as being able to remove skimmate, but they do make hob skimmers that wouldn't fit in small tanks due to the size of the skimmer itself, at least without major modifications.
