I also recently started, but did almost a month worth of research and cycled my tank slowly. You'll need live sand, live rock, and patience. Make sure you test your water (test kits for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are relatively cheap), or have it tested at your LFS. Ammonia will first spike, then drop, nitrites will spike, then drop, and finally nitrates will spike, then drop. The process can take several weeks to several months depending on what you do to help it along. Don't cycle with a fish, you can easily drop in a raw shrimp from your grocery store if you don't want to wait the month or so that live rock and live sand will take. The shrimp decaying will kick off the process. I recommend doing a search on these boards for "tank cycle" or "cycling" for information preferrably before doing anything. Make sure you do your research or you'll probably end up with dead fish. Hope this helps, best of luck!
