Hi all new to the forums!! been reading alot lately on eels off of here. i have had reefs tanks in the past and about 6 months ago gave it all up when i moved and went to freshwater, now i am realizing how boring they are lol. I am getting a 240g 96x24x25 in about 6-7 weeks. I don't really want to speed 500 dollars on an eel though evan though i like the dragon eels. i like the tesseleta eels but from what i read everyone says that they are pretty nasty. But then again i just want one main attraction, not really into having tons of fish in my tank. just wondering how you thing one would fair in a tank that size by himself, If not to well any suggestions(without spending 500 dollars).

Welcome. That is my exact tank GC's (I assume).
Interesting question.
Dragon will run 500-1000 each, and you could probably do 2-3.
Tessy will run about 100-200, and you could do one for some time. But a Tessy may outgrow that tank. Have you seen these guys as adults?
I considered te same thing too buit an 8' tank with just an eel sounds..um..boring to me. I have 2 eels and a bunch of fish in my 240 and love it. I also have my Dragon eel in a seperate tank and love him too.
...something cool, simple, easy to care for..but takes up some space

Have you considered 3-4 Volitan Lions or even Mixed Species Lions?
$40 each, grow to 10" in 1st yr, personable, simple to care for, feeding 2-3 times a week.
Just a thought. Saw a picture of a 125 once with 2 Adult Lions in it and it looked pretty cool.

Harley has some good suggestions....If you want a single Eel I would get a West African horned moray eel, they get to 3 1/2 feet and have very interesting coloration, and not so expensive like the Hawaiian or Japanese Dragon.

Or even several Brazilian Dragon Moray eels....200-300 each.

You dont need a 240 for an eel. Setting up 240 is going cost a decent amount of coin. $500 for a single fish is a lot but they do live a long time. If you add any fish that grow to a decent size you will spend the same. With 240 gallons of empty tank you will add more fish or why go that big?

The West African and Brazilian Dragon are the same (Muraena melanotis) species if I'm not mistaken, just from different sides of the Atlantic, thus completely different coloration...One of each would be sweet.

I also agree with Crypt Keeper, Eels are so long lived and hardy, it's a lot easier to justify dropping $500 or more on one.

The Brazilian I'm speaking of is actually a Muraena pavonina.

The African Horned gets a lot bigger, Muraena melanotis.

For one of these I'd do a 125-150 square and save some $ over the long run in Salt, Heating the water, Skimmer size, etc.
Agreed one of each would be cool.
If you want a Tessy or Green your gonna need the 500g from Glasscages. Water changes are gonna be painful.

+2 on the cost of the eel vs it's lifespan and hardiness.

Lot's of sites out there for Eel info...
Start here:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/morays.htm
As for where to find a Whitespot Moray or a African Horned Moray?
Check L.A.D.D. from time to time...I think they have a Horned now.
I believe it's ok to post this as SWF does not sell these Eels.
