I'm setting up my tank for the first time so I've been looking up lots of website online and I came across this stuff called "Garf Grunge" and I was just wondering if anyone has used it, if so was it any good and would anyone recommend it. Also, theres a system that doesn't use any filters, just power heads, they call it the Plenum system...anyone use this one and is it any good?? Thanks!

I'm planning a 40gal-breeder softies reef (I have a 30 right now) and I might consider a plenum. They can be sized differently based on the size of the tank. Maybe only 1/2" space underneath the sand instead of 1".

I have a plenum under my 29. I had one in my 10 that was up for about 2 years, until I transferred to the 29. They are coming out with new information on DSB that suggests they process nitrates. I will try to find a link to the study. Anyway, I think they are very effective.

I ran a plenum for several years(eggcrate, wire mess, and several different grain size sand).I found no real benefits of DSB's vs 2-3" bed.The stuff I've read says pretty much the same thing. The only thing I remember was that coralline grew mad fast. When I look back at the pics of my tank from back then,it sure looked ugly with such a deep bed.

If you are going to do a plenium I don't think you want crushed coral. Why are you set on crushed coral as your substrate? CC is oldschool and I haven't seen a single post where anyone likes their CC instead they always ask how to remove it and wish they never had it in the first place.
