i've always wanted to do a saltwater tank. i've had penty of freshwater and want to do something new. So here we go.......
40 Gal JEBO tank and stand.
Top Filter (450 L/H)
Lights are 36w. and 10,000K blue
The pump for the filter ( i'm not sure what that stem on the side is for it has a piece of air hose that connects form it and goes to the top of the filter anybody know what it's for????)
then this thing that returns the water. at the right of picture #2 you can see were the water goes that leads to this peice.
i was wanting to star with the basic L/R and L/S. and eventually work up to having corals. The amount of lighting that was mwntioned above would that be sufficent???
I'am also working on getting........
2- heaters
2- Maxi-Jet mp-600
some moon lights
and a Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper controller. All input appreciated. keep ya posted!!

Pretty slick setup for a 40g, didn't realize they made them in this size. How much LR do you have in mind?

i would take that airline off the powerhead, or else ur goin to have bubbles in the tank, and bubbles, in a saltwater tank is a big no no

looks like there is room to put some longer bulbs so you might can change those out with ballast and get a little more out of it

i was thinking about 50 lbs. or so? and about 60 lbs. of L/S. you think thats a good start with the sand? with the rock that will just be a build up over time. whats ur thought on actual ocean water compared to making it?

I dont think you need that much LS. Go under Live Rock Live Sand section of the website which has a great calculator how many pounds to put in. I only have 20lbs in my 29 and it works fine. 40- 55 Lbs is a good amount of LR too. Have any ideas for fish yet?
Yeah it is a slick setup. Really like that hood, cover, light combo thing. Looking good!

1-2 yellowtail blue damsel
1- purpleback pseudochromis
1- mandrin dragonet
1- pinstripe wrasse

I would avoid the mandarin and the damsels. You shouldn't have that many fish in a tank this size anyway; you can probably get away with 5-6 small (full-size) fish max. I'd stay around the 4 or 5 fish range.
The reasoning behind the mandarin and damsels being bad ideas are:
1. Mandarins require lots of pods (their primary food source) and you'll never be able to support a pod population in the live rock you'll fit in a 40g. I've seen anecdotal evidence that the need at least 100lbs of live rock for a sufficient pod population.
2. Damsels get highly territorial very quick and will fight, and often kill, other tank-mates.
Hope that helps.
