I am contimplating setting up a 65 gallon aquariuw as a fish only salt water tank and wanted to get some advice on the best filter / filtering method to use to ensure a healthy tank. I have had fresh water fish before but this would be my first endeavor into salt water fish and I want to do it right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

hi and welcome to the boards!
you're best bet is to get a sump or sump / refugium, and a maybe 100# of LR.
anything you dont understand copy and paste it in the search box! :)

You will find that saltwater fishkeeping is considerably different from freshwater. While you will not find unanimity, most of us don't use a filter in the same sense that freshwater keepers do. We rely on live rock to do most of the processing of waste, and commonly use an undertank or hang-on-back sump to assist in bioprocessing. These also commonly contain a skimmer and macroalgae as well. Short answer to your question - there is plenty of advice here, so keep asking specific questions. Also, use the search feature since many of the questions you have have been asked and answered before, but if you don't understand, there is an amazing breadth and depth of skill and dedication in the people on these forums.

I agree with saltnoob to a point. The live rock and refugium are more beneficial to a reef type setup . If you want fish only, the lighting and live rock are not as necessary. Like stated, use the search feature and read , read , read. Take your time and when you have specific questions once you start , then post em.
I would say one thing, if you are ever thinking about a reef with corals and such you should start that way. That is so you don't waste time and money on lighting and equipment that you will have to buy again to establish a reef setup. So decide what you want for sure is the best way I think.....good luck

I have a 55g and a canister filter. You can spend a lot of money or enough to have a decent set up. I went cheap but practical, a 65g is still kinda small. If you are a beginner, you might want to learn with fish only and some inverts. You will discover there is a lot of stuff you don't know, and you might get frustrated, the last thing you want to do is waste or spend too much. Lighting for corals/reef set-ups can get pricey too.
Throw some substrate in there, don't buy all live sand, you can seed the other substrate with addatives or LR (don't use crushed coral or everyone will bash you for it later). Let your tank cycle for a month or so, read up on that, take your water to the LFS and start with some clowns. Read up on every step, best advice you can get.
