My aquarium is approximately 3 months old and I was wandering about adding an algae eater. I have a tang, damsel, and a clown fish. Is is too early to add or should Iwait. Also when I do add what kind of algae eater would you recommend that is compatible with these. Thanks.

first, you are gonna get a lotta slack about a tang in a 26g tank. they need alot of room to swim to be happy. Turbo snails are very good algae grazers.

i would give the tang back, a 26 is way to small for your tank, even if it is pretty small now, it will outgrow your tank and die from stress, i have a 55 and chose not to keep a tang because they need ample swimming room. Trade the tang in for another fish, maybe another clown as a mate for your clown, Make sure your clown is A LOT smaller then the clown in your tank.
3 months might be a little too early for an algae eater, my tank has been running since Jan and i still do not have enough algae to for a fish to survive on. Might want to wait until you have an algae problem or have enough algae for the invert/fish to eat

You are very right about the tang, but I have no where to go with him because I bought him at ***** and they will not swap and there are no other saltwater stores around.

mbenson, ***** will take the fish off your hands... u just won't get any money back for it. So you have to think about what you want to do... do u want to keep the tang or give it back and get no money back for it? Also, do try the classified section. gl...

there's no problem with giving the tang back. But i would not give it back to *****. Go to a LFS who knows how to raise fish and give it to them, they will probably give you store credit towards the next purchase.

I thought there werent any saltwater stores around there? I am sure you could find a fellow hobbyist who lives around you, see if they would take it.

Yeah I guess I could take it back to ***** but I hate to give them the satisfaction as they were the ones who put the sales pitch on me when I bought it. Also, the last time I went a couple of weeks ago to see if they had some algae eaters or snails their fish tanks looked as if no one had done anything to their tanks in weeks. The fish looked like they all were on their death bed. There is one other lfs about 45 miles away but we can never catch them open.
I also checked my tank tonight and my ammonia was at .50, my nitrate was at 50 and my nitrite was 0. That is the same as my readings have been for the last 4 weeks. It is 3 months old. Is it possible that it has cycled?

If that ammonia level is correct it is at a lethal level. Do a water change immediately maybe 40-50%( might be a little extreme but definately 30)
