Anyone can sound good in studio if you have a good producer and the right eq boards.
The new guy sounded spot on to Layne when I saw them perform. Have you seen the new singer perform, or are you making assumptions based off the new single playing which has inflections of the new singer's normal singing voice?
Izzy didn't leave because he hated axl....He left because guns and roses was getting to big. Axl turning into a jerk just helped him make his decision. They are friends at this point in time.
Pontius was saying Layne and Jerry were often tough to tell apart, not the new guy. I have not seen Duval, just let me know when he has 2 #1 albums and sells his 14 millionth album here in the U.S.

There are a lot of stories as to why Izzy left, yes one was that he hated being "big" and wasn't having fun anymore. Other stories said Axl was to "controlling".

No you're right, it's not the same...Mother Love Bone (the original Pearl Jam) with Stone and Jeff and Andrew Wood singing was every bit as good as any album Pearl Jam ever has done (IMO), Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose and they added Eddie and changed the name to PJ.
Without Layne, the current AIC will never have an album as good as Dirt and Facelift. Guaranteed.

Layne Staley was what made Alice. Jerry Cantrell has been "good" without him.
If you can't tell the difference between Layne's voice and Jerry's.....C'mon.
Jerry Cantrell is a fantastic writer, so is Izzy Stradlin. How did Izzy do without Slash and Axl.

I've only ever heard 2 songs by Mother Love Bone. and in those 2 songs, they sounded like a wannabe Gun and Roses and nothing at all like Pearl Jam or what would even be considered a "grunge" band. just from the little I heard from them, I'd say their albums were headed for the bargain bins if it wouldn't have been for forming PJ with Vedder. PJ was just a total package.....you've got a great singer who happens to write very smart lyrics. then you have Stone/Jeff who were great songwriters. then you have McCready who without a doubt is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. and the second drummer (Dave A, the one that never should've been fired). Mother Love Bone would've never achieved the success that PJ did.
If AIC would've started out with William Duvall instead of Layne Staley, they still could've been just as good because you would've had the same guy writing all the music and lyrics and the singing is close enough to the same that they still would've been great.
this new AIC song sounds like an old AIC song and most will probably agree it's better than pretty much anything that's currently being played on rock radio.
OF COURSE, I can tell the difference in Layne and Jerry's voice....Layne sang with a kind of lisp that made his singing very unique. but would argue that he was NO BETTER a singer than Jerry. listen to songs were Jerry did all the singing like "Got Me Wrong", "Don't Follow", "Heaven Beside You" or "Brother". he is an amazing singer in his own right.

To each their own Pontius.
Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain sure as hell were not the best to musicians that came out of the Seattle Music era of the 90's. They technically were mediocre guitar players whom would never give vocal lessons to anyone. Unfortunately their drug addiction gave them something you can't teach or ever replace.
The 4 songs you listed wouldn't even crack my top 20 favorite AIC songs....Heaven beside you!!!!

As far as ripping on Mother Love Bone....Just proves further you don't get it, that is sacrilegious in Seattle. Most Seattleans would rate that second only to 10 of the albums Pearl Jam did. Wannabe Guns and Roses?!?!? Not even the same genre.

are you implying they were helped to become famous because of their drug addictions? it's pretty well documented that Cobain never even did heroin until he met Courtney Love, which was AFTER Nevermind became a huge hit.
those 4 songs were great AIC songs. how about "Would?"? that's Jerry doing the verses. and the verses of "Grind", and the verses of "No Excuses", and all of "Over Now". in fact, most of the songs on the final album (the 3 legged dog album) and the 2 EPs were primarily sung by Jerry. so all those songs were mediocre too?
we'll just have to disagree on MLB. I clicked on a couple of their songs on youtube just to confirm what I'd heard in their other songs. some of the music is similar to PJ, but Wood sounds like an overly pretentious glam hairspray singer. I couldn't care less what anybody from Seattle says about that. he doesn't sound like a "grunge" or metal singer, he sings like he wants to be Axl Rose.

I think you have MLB confused with somebody else, I will leave it at that....Listen to the album.
Another album you should get in Mad Season....Google it....Layne and Mike McCready were the major part of the album.
I think you like the softer side of AIC, my favorites were the really heavy stuff from the first 2 albums.
Here is a little inside scoop for you on AIC. After the Dirt album, they became a mess, mostly due to Layne. Their manager finally got them all together and asked them each individually. "Drugs or Music?" Jerry and Mike said "Music", Layne and Sean said "drugs". They had a contract with their label for a few more albums (I forget how many), they released Jar of Flies, and the self titled albums with Layne and Jerry pretty much hating each other.
Again, I think Jerry Cantrell is fantastic. My brother knows many of the Seattle musicians from that era and says Jerry is the best "famous person" he has ever met in music. I still think Layne's voice and "edge" made AIC, and they well never be what they were without him.
One of my favorites here.
