Hello Everyone - new-b here - My wife (MRS Clause) just picked me up a 55 gallon tank for christmas!!! and i'm excited as a scholl girl to get addicted to this hobby. I kept fresh water fish when i was a kid and am psyched about getting back into the hobby - So i figure with a little bit of fish experience ( and a better budget than my 15 year-old-self) Salt would be the dream-come-true next step in the world of aquarists.
My life-time friend DragonZim directed me to this site - so i thought i'd drop a line...and introduce myself before i begin with a parade of Q&A.
So, Helloooooo everyone! :hilarious

What a fabulous present from Mrs. Claus! You must have been very good this year!!! I asked my personal Santa (the boyfriend) for stuff to help fill up my empty tank. If I get live rock in my stocking, does that have a different meaning than if I get a lump of coal in my stocking?!

Best of luck to you and your new tank. I expect to see some pics posted when you get things up and running! Have fun with it, and I'll see ya 'round the 'boards!

(Looks like Mr. Clause is under a little pressure to get Mrs. Clause a really awesome gift too - maybe not live rock... but a clear sparkly one  )
Thanks all

WHO DEY,
I like to think I'm pretty special--and I remind him of that frequently!

Couldn't help but notice you're a Bengals fan. A client of mine has a son that plays for the Bengals. I just can't remember what his name is, but he's been out all season with a knee injury. If I can remember his name, I'll let you know!

AZ- well i got Mrs Clause a 1.5K 'sparkly rock' for our engagement... and another 1.0 total weight one for 'the deed' so i was thinking of some nice 'sparkly' accessories to accent the others - what do you think - earrings or bracelet?

Go with the earrings! Unless she's the type that wears bracelets, she'll probably get more use out of the earrings. Personally, I find that bracelets get in the way and they annoy me when I'm trying to type.
I noticed in your profile that you're an architect. My bf claims that architects are his daily nemesis--he's a mechanical engineer (yup, I'm in love with a geek!).

So i started to put together a project list of how i intend to start putting my tank together, and making all of the decisions that plague a first-timer...(wanna make as few mistakes as possible)
My favorite option under consideration is a FOWLR. I am starting with an All Glass 55 -"KIT"
(the bigger-the-better-bug is already biting me - but i gotta start somewhere)
it comes with a heater, a filter, thermometer and some other funstuff that'll probably be useless to me sooner than later. So i figure ill purchase some good equipment for the DT and use the other stuff for a small QT set-up.
The 'unofficial' for the 55:
Canister filter
protein skimmer
2 powerheads
R/O unit
40lbs tahitian moon sand w/ 20lbs Indo-pacific LR
50lbs Tonga branch +50lbs Fiji premium...
any manufacturer reccomendations? thoughts, contributions?

My wife is in love with a Geek too -

Well although it's rumored that architects & engineers do not make good be fellows - I've got a great relationship with mine- the trick is to always make it a negotiation and come to decisions that work for everyone...
However...once you throw a contractor in the mix the architect & engineer team up to fight the common enemy

I'll pass along a suggestion made to me regarding live rock. Get base rock in addition to the LR and let the LR seed the BR. I was told you can get base rock for a couple bucks a pound. The way I see it, the less I spend on rock, the more I can spend on critters!

WELCOME, my friend! For any that may be interested, ChuckCAC and I have been friends for about 28 years now. Pretty impressive since we're both only 32... Oh, and my fiance is in love with a geek as well, so everyone rejoice, the geeks get some luvin too!!!
The canister filter that he's got on his list is an Eheim 2215. I used it on my 55 and then on my 75 till I got enough rock in there that I didnt need it anymore.

Levi Jones, Rich Brahm, Eric Ghaiciuc, Sam Adams, Jon Busin, and Jon Thornton. So he's prob one of em
