IMO yes I think the hammer would do ok if placed near the top of the tank.
I'd also recommend direct feeding it on a regular basis as well.

1) GET THE PC'S! Sell your kidney or something. If you are not willing to do your part as GOD w/ this tank, than take EVERYTHING back. Some people should never be allowed w/in 100 feet of a tank. I'm not saying that this is you, my friend, I'm saying DON'T BE one of them.
2)DO NOT listen to the lfs guy..... Just don't... I work at one here, but the people that run the saltwater tanks there know so much about this, as you will learn about many members of this board. Yes, SOME lfs people know what they are talking about, but it is a gamble, and if you are serious about keeping this tank, than you need to open your mind more to these people (on the board), and close out everything the lfs guy says. I don't care if the guy is in a wheelchair, or if he lost his whole lower torsoe, did you buy that crap cuz you felt sorry for him or because handicaped people don't lie. I don't care for an answer to that question either, just wanted to get my point across........
3)Don't get rid of your NO lights you have now. Use those for your actinics. For some reason, normal output lights make for brighter actinics. Somebody help me out on this one, is it just me or is this statement true? Anywayz, there is my input for now. You're welcome.

first of all, how do you know the lfs people dont know as much as people on here who dont run or own a fish shop? not everyone that works in a lfs is a dumb dumb. next, im sorry, but that comment about him being disabled pisses me off, im disabled as well, and dont like to hear people talk like that about anyone for any reason. like i said in another post, i dont get much money coming in, because im disabled and cant work and dont get money from the state, but im doing what i can to get better lighting ASAP. i just think you should have thought that post over a little more before saying that stuff, thats just IMO.

Don't take it personally....he's just trying to get his point across. The bottom line when it comes to money is that if you try to "squeak" by with equipment, you will end up paying more by having to replace dead corals and fish. It's much cheaper to just do it right in the first place....this is a lesson I, and many others, have learned the hard way. I have been shocked by NO lights so many times it isn't funny.....they are very cheap lights, and not very waterproof at all......just look at where the bulb clicks in.....does it look safe with water? Get yourself some good lighting, and please realize, it's a one time purchase aside from new bulbs.....dead corals are an ongoing cost to replace, and very disappointing as well.
fishkiller, We got a newbie here, and let's make him know he came to the right place for info.

trying to get his point across or not, i still think it is out of line in any way he ment it, as far as lighting, we are doing the best we can, but dont or wont have like $600 to get a brand new set or anything, so trying to get the best deal i can.

we have an emrald crab, do they eat it? i thought i read somewhere that they do, if not then we'll have to get it off there very soon.

ok, what is the best way to get it off the rock? take it out and cut it off with a knife or something? or just pop it? dont want to spread it anymore then it is now.

ok, I'm sorry if what I said SEEMED out of line, but I made no negative comment about disabled people. My brother has downsyndrome, so don't try to get w/ the insensitive attacks. If you paid attention to what I said, you would see that there was nothing bad said about them. Just wanna clear that up. I assume that you have sympathy for those disabled like you or worse than you, which is why I said maybe you felt sorry for him. Bad choice of words I guess. I have helped many handicaped people, including raising my brother. I have helped at many special olympics events around florida and georgia. Over time, I realized that these people were far more abled than 25% around them. Yes, we are talking urban areas, but who cares. "Normal" people don't give the "handicaped" people enough credit, at ALL! My mother is starting a ranch in Colorado for adults w/ downsyndrome. If you still think I'm wrong for saying what I did, than someone needs therapy. If not, cool. Also, pc's won't cost you $600, lol....... Go on ----..... You can get some for under $100, I promise....
Sammy- Sorry, just trying to drill it in his head for good. I've learned that if you REALLY piss someone off, they'll remember everything you said. I also don't agree w/ someone who is trying to create the minimal living conditions for these animals b/c they are on a short budget. You know what? I want a Ferrari, but I can't buy one b/c I CAN NOT afford it. But that is life, ya know? Maybe later!

i JUST LOOKED ON E-BAY. You can get 2-175W everything you need including bulbs for $200.00 I just got this from the same people and it is really nice. Just look on e-bay under petsfishlighting and type in metal for the search you will see it as a Buy it Now. This will give you 350W total with what you already have you will be good to go. You may have to build you a new canopy which you can do out of a $15.00 sheet of plywood and you can make it look nice. I did!
that's a lot cheaper than $600.00

i would get stuff off ---- if not for one thing, i dont trust ----. also i dont have the tools to build a top, plus i cant walk very well, really hard to just get around, no way i could build a top, wish i could though. and i used to work for a shipping place like UPS or fedEX, lol trust me, you dont want to ship lighting through the mail, i know. were just going to go with a duel 96w PC for now, and then get 4 blue bulbs for our fixtures now, thanks for all the info from everyone, and well get some new pics of the corals when we get the new lights up.

ok well i went out and got the duel 96w PC set, came with 1 10k and 1 blue, and im also going to put 2 48" NO 40w blue bulbs in our old one and hang that for added color in the tank, so, is this enough light now? if not i give up

ok, here are some pics with our new lighting we just put up, they are all open and looking good, way better then with the old lights
