Heres my new updated design for my 20 gallon rm sump. for my 75 gal sw w fish, coral, live rock.
IM going to use rubber tubing for the water in and out. at the adjustment valve ill switch it over to pvc.
ill take any help before i install. just waiting for my pump to arrive in mail.
The ball valve, if you use a tee in the return line that redirects the water to go back through the filter tubs and put the ball on that line then you can still control how much water goes up the return but not put any back presser on the pump.
ok any chance u could just do a quick sketch of that i think i understand but if i put a t in wont i have to cap off one end. sorry if this is a stupid question.
Ok looks like this and you use the ball valve to divert part of the flow from going to the tank. The only issue is you need a filter on the pump so the ball valve does not get clogged and most have one any how. With the ball valve closed all the water from the pump goes to the tank. With it cracked some of the water goes to the filter and the rest to the tank. A gate valve would be easier to tune in but not need.
Honestly the skimmer should be fed the dirtiest water IMO......The ball valve does no harm to the pump in the position it's in. As long as you use the valve on the output side of the pump doesn't cause any harm.
Ok, we know that this is not going to be as good as a 20g tank that we would be able to silicone some water tight baffles in. So do I think this is going to be good enough, I do and have seen others run similar sumps for a year or two till they upgraded. If you do get lots of bubbles back in the DT move the overflow line as far from the return as you can.
So as long as the return pump has enough extra water flow this will work.
