New eel

At the LFS today to buy salt, and looked over the fish in their tanks. This store does not sell marine fish and they have only freshwater tanks, but what do I find, a 12" Snoflake Moray eel. I had to pick him up before some unknowing person did and he is now in my 55 gallon FW tank. My question is, what is the best way to acclimate him to my marine tank? Will a slow drip acclimation of 4-5 hours be enough or should I spread it out over a longer period? I was totally suprised that he could be in FW at all.

A scathing message has been sent to the head office of the chain, and an informatory phonecall to the aquatic manager of the store. How long should I acclimate him for though?

Are you sure its a snowflake? There are many morays that can and do live in fresh water and brackish too as well as salt.

ya, i highly doubt that it is a snowflake eel, theres no way he could survive that long in freshwater. Either it isn't a snowflake, or your tricking us. I'm guessing #1. LOL any chance you can post a pic?

I strongly agree with dogstar. A snowflake eel cannot survive in a freshwater tank at the LFS and then at in a FW tank at your house for more then like 5 min (not sure about that lol)!!!

The store probably had one saltwater tank with the eel in it. The rest of the tanks were freshwater.

Question #1 is the winner! I guess I didn't know what I was talking about. It appears that I have a Gymnothorax tile, aka brackish water moray. It was labled at the store as a Snowflake Moray eel and I never realized that there were others than full marine. OOPS! They are in fresh when young and then move to brackish or full marine as they grow.

Yea I saw a freshwater moray eel at ***** the other day that looked really cool, it was actually bigger then my snowflake. But yea there are many types of fresh and brakish water eels, most breed in saltwater.

Yep, fishbase has it as from the Muraenidae (moray) family.
Did you realy write that letter? maybe should write another one.
Are you going to keep it in fresh water?

Yes, another letter was sent, along with a short, embarassing visit to the LFS. Live and learn. He will be in freshwater for about a month while I cycle a 30 gallon brackish. I am thinking of following the basic guidelines to bring him to marine as to what applies for Green Spotted Puffers. Raise the sg no more than .002 per week and graduate it according to total length divided by 3. This is not the actual recomendation, just my rough interpretation of them.
