wow. good luck with that. i was going to get one but decided not to because i didnt want to dose so much phytoplankton and still have it die on me....
im assuming you did some research on it?
even if you have, if you search "rob toonen flame scallops" on google youll find a good article

Nice addition but will not live long in home aquariums. Just make sure you monitor your levels to sense when he expires as they go for weeks and not show them selves. Good luck.

I had one of those and it died a week later. I think my nitrate was to high. Everything inside of the scallop started to shrink and fall out (but i took it out of the tank). The scallop was completly empty and it smelled so bad. But it was cool while it lasted.

Yes scallops are hard, but they are NOT doomed to die!
1.) What are you feeding it?
I would suggest using DT algae. and feed the little guy daily.
Tell me about your tank. How old is it?
lights, filters....pictues?

you def do need to feed it a lot, but none the less, search for the article i mentioned above. almost all, even with feedings still end up dieing in a few months from lack of starvation. im not saying it isnt possible to keep one longterm, but you dont have a good chance. having a DSB, refugium, or better yet, a miracle mud filter will help because it will produce a lot more invertebrate larva. although if you have a refugium or mud filter, the best thign to do is to keep it IN there... the difficulty of these animals has nothign to do with how much, how often, or how regular you feed.
the best combination of foods that i know if is dosing some DTs phytoplankton and also DTs oyster eggs.

ive had my flame scallop for months now. great addition for only 4 bucks. i dont really feed him at all, at least not intentionally. i put invert food in and he seems to like that as well as all my corals. i also put in photoplankton like once every month. and i put little shrimp cubes in for the fish anenomes and for him they love it
. and hes as healthy as a clam, or a scallop

Well I never thought of putting it in there, but I guess it wouldn't be so bad there. We are currently feeding it Zooplankton, and I'm going to try Marine Snow. Thanks for the article, I looked it up and read it, I knew it was gonna be difficult to maintain, but after that, It sounds like an impossible task. Well hopefully it will go well.

I think the true problem with flame scallops is that they move constantly so it's hard to spot feed them. Thats why they are considered doomed IMO. I have had mine for about 6-7 months now I guess, and it goes into the back behind rocks for weeks at a time. Good luck.

Well mine hasn't moved yet, I stuck him in a little cove I built by the glass so maybe he feels safe there. The problem I'm having is when I try to feed him, he closes up when I get the tube near him. Any suggestions?

when you feed any bivalves, you have to put the food a bit away from him and let it drift into him. otherwise they will reject it and could even choke on the overflow of food and die.

Does anyone know about "Marine Snow?" I just tried it for my Scallop and it says to add 5ml/20 Gal. Since my scallop is the only thing that feeds on it right now, can I just feed a smaller dose to the scallop, like with a baster or something?

I have had mine for atleast 7 months, I use real phytoplankton that I purchase from the auction site, this guy harvests it himself, no fancy name brand that costs an arm and a leg. I use one capful every other week and it has not only lived but has grown. He stays in one spot, actually has only moved once since I got him, in a large conch shell. He is directly under a powerhead, so when I dump it in it drifts down to him. If you point or put anything near your scallop he will puff and have a fit and wont get anything. Just put it in the flow path as someone stated earlier. It's the size of the partical of food not the food, too large of a partical and they spit it out. Hope this helps you! Enjoy your new friend

IMO, don't go with Marine snow. Lots of money for mostly water. Do the DT's options as mentioned...oyster eggs, phyto, even rotifers and such. Stick with products that are the real thing.

FWIW, these animals will often be fine for months...but like many other animals, are slowly starving while showing no outward signs. They do take a long time to starve, and it is difficult for us to comprehend.

Thanks for the advice. I had been doing good about researching info before buying things, but I was spellbound by the light show I just took the advise of the guy at the lfs. Stupid me. Well I'll try my best to help this guy and like I said before, hopefully he'll make it.
Ophiura, did I read U used to work at an aquairum? Wasn't Moody Gardens was it?
