On 6/24/04 I put a deposite on my mewest family member. A Blue Fronted Amazon that was hatched on 5/22/04. I don't get her/him until 9/22 :( , after the weaning.
For years I debated on getting large bird and I narrowed it down to 3. A African Grey, a Blue & Gold Macaw and a Amazon.
Well I eliminated the macaw because of its size and destructive nature. Macaws have a tendacy to climb off their perchs and cages and get in to trouble. Not to mention the cage alone would have to be huge.
I really like the African Grey not only because of its managable size it's also the best talker of all birds. The problem is Greys tend to demand more attention from their owners which is not good when you work full time, sometimes 12 hours a day. Also, although beautiful in its own right I just thought a parrot should be full of colors.
So I decided on the Amazon. It happens to be a Blue Fronted Amazon because the lady that owns the Parrot store I go to hppens to breed Blue Fronts. I got to see the parents which is a plus because you get to see their colors, which pass down to their siblings. Luckly for me these parents are very vibrant and healthy. The Amazon is a managable size and is the second best talker of the parrots. They are also known to be able to entertain themselves while staying in their cages and on their perches. All around just the best choice for my life style.
It's a choice of a lifetime so you got to be sure. Amazons live on average 60 years so it should never just be a impulse buy. This has been planned ever since the 5th grade and many years went in to what I wanted and when was a good time to buy.
Now I just hope my Sun Conure doesn't get jelous. lol
Here's a month old picture, I'm getting a new picture tomorrow. It has so many feathers now.

i would love to see the updated picture, sounds like a beautiful bird !!
i have a congo african grey, (she/he) is a little over 2 years old and i have had her for a year and a half. they do require a lot of attentiion but i think its fair to say that about all parrots. during the day when i am working she stays in her large cage filled with toys and treats, and my dog also keeps her company. i also turn on the radio for her during the day. when i get home i have to make sure i spend some time with her and she has 3 diffrent places to hang out so she wont get board. i think its great that you spent so much time researching because like you said its a life long adventure!!! please show pics when you get them, good luck:joy:

Tyr-sog just watch out for the pupils on the amazons!!! When they get real small look out an attack is coming. I had a hybrid years ago. It was a blue front/ double yellow head. I had to get rid of him when I got married. He only liked one person me. He was beautiful had the full yellow head w/ the blue front crest.

Sweet!, I'd like a bird, but I don't know if I'm ready for the commitment, plus the dog and cat might stress it a bit too.

:happyfish I had a parrot once, but it bit a hole in my dad's ear. Luckily the owners of the bird finally called to get him. . It was all snuggly, then CHOMP! I loved pete though. He was a little demented though. He only liked me, and NOONE else. I don't know what he was. Funny story about pete, I was outside cleaning my parents motorhome because we were going on a trip, and this bird walked right up to me out of the woods. I posted everywhere for about a year, and no one responded, and flyers everywhere. About a year someone finally called, and said they were petes owners, and they lived 2 blocks away! They described him to a tee and were his owners. I think they didn't call because he was a crazy bird. They called 3 weeks later, and asked if I wanted him back, but I said no thanks.:hilarious . He was probably crazy because they had so many kids, and that's too much stress even for a big parot. He was pretty- he was grey with red under the wings and a red and blue tail. He may have been a quaker, He talked VERY clearly. Dang bird imitated the phone TOO well, and sang songs, and talked to my dog. He was very commicle, and snuggly with me, but only me. Good luck with your parrot, and hope you don't have the same problems. -ali

My dog is a bird killer...
. I offered to watch someones bird once, it was a really cool bird. Then one day, I came home, and he had mangaed to get upstairs (which my dogs never do) opened the door to my bedroom, and got into the cage somehow (which was locked) and then came the feather fest... Man I got so pissed at that dog. He respects me now... But that person, the birds owner, wasnt happy...
