It's not clear from your post, but do you have any powered filtration at all? I have a 55gal reef tank and am still using my bioball wet/dry system (cleaned regularly), along with a big clump of chaeto in the sump, and have 2 hang on canister filters for particulate removal. I change out 10 gallons a week and have zero nitrates. That may be a little excessive, but since I got my RO/DI unit I figure I might as well use it to my advantage. I have 7 fish, 3 crabs, a bunch of hermits and snails, 1 condi, 4 LPS, 2 SPS, some zoo rocks and some polyps.

I've been battling nitrates for a long time as well. Since I built my fuge and wet/dry system my trades have been cut in half. I am still waiting on my cheato's to come in mail. I have a water change tonight. I am getting rid of my hang on back penguin fliter tonight. Also what's your flow rate, trates are also caused by over feeding. Try cutting back a little.

ok crystal clear water and nitrates are totally different from each other. Also the fliter media is a nitrate trap if not changed or cleaned regularly. IMO get a fuge and lose the hob penguin. Also try and get yourself some cheato's. Your flow rate has alot to do with your trates as well. What kind of power head do you have

A filter won't help with nitrates! They are the end product of your nitrogen cycle and water changes are the easiest and quickest way to lower them. The chaeto will pull nitrates out but probably should be only an adjunct to water changes. Based on your first post, I think you really need to do some larger water changes, like 20%/week until your nitrates get lower.
