I am getting a fish tank from my friend it is 75gs. He has fresh water in it now but I'm going to make it salt water. He has some filters but not a whole lot of stuff. What would you guys suggest getting. I don't want to buy the most expensive stuff out there but I want good quality stuff. Please tell me the item and then what would be a good brand to buy. I thank you all for your help. One last thing..... Should I use boxed salt water to make it easy on my self or should I try to mix it. Thank you again.

i have a 75 gal and we have the empiror 400 hang on the back filter... love it... and you need to have a skimmer. We use the bac pac 2 and id say a skimmer is the best advice to have on your tank. You are going to want live rock. we have 110 pounds.. ordered it here on sw.com... you can use however much you want.. live sand i think imo is the best. i used 60 pounds of fiji pink sand. we use coralife salt 41.00/ five gallon bucket at lfs. you need to use rodi water if you can. and mix it yourself with the salt letting it sit over night at least so the salt disolves well. Good luck and if you need any more help feel free to email me..id be glad to answer those questions that i can..

SO if I get that back filter and the skimmer that is all I will need to buy? I was going to buy the salt water that comes in a box. I know it is expensive but I figured it was easier then mixing it. I will want that sand and live rock to start out with. Could you please email me some pictures of your tank teviesfish so I can see how your set up looks. I'm really excited to get started. Any help you can give me on salt water tanks/fish will help me a lot because this is my first salt water tank and I don't want to mess the whole thing up. hehehe. Thank you for your help my email is my user name at aol.com. thank you very much. Casey

I'm running an Emperor 400 on my 72 Gallon, too!
I'm going to get a Bak Pak or an Aqua C Remora Skimmer.
Oh oh, and don't forget Powerheads! <3

You need good circulation and go live sand all the way. Let it cycle. (not with fish). Patience. Hydrometer to measure salinity, a refractometer being the best and most accurate. Is it glass or acrylic?

For a 75gal an Emperor 400 will work ok. But remember the unlike fresh, Saltwatch tanks need a lot of turnover. About 10X per hour. So for a 75gal tank you need that water to be filtered/skimmer at the rate of 750gallons an hour. On my 75 gal I have an Emperor 400 hanging on the back, My skimmer hanging on the back, I have a Rena XP3 under the stand. and three powerheads in the tank to circulate the water.
The emperor 400 I run the carbon pads and my phosphate media. and the Rena XP3 I run some more carbon, Nitrata zorb, and the different sponges to keep the water totally clean. That tank has been up for 4 plus years with out any problems. As for the lights, I would get a set of T-5's. They will handle most corals you may be interested in.
As for the water in the box. I would say NO NO NO! Saltwater needs to be airated, and unless they have a power head running in that box, I don't see how that could be. Saltwater looses its benefical strengths after sitting a while. usally in a week or two. and that is if you keep it airated. You have no ideal how long that water has been sitting in that box.Could be six month, a year maybe longer. If I recall right, a few weeks ago there was someone on here that was haveing problems with their tank and that is how she set up her tank.
Saltwater is not that difficult to mix up. and if you are nervous about mixing it yourself then go to your LFS and buy the saltwater they have. (Bring a couple clean big jugs).
You will need extension cords, timers, zip ties, test kits. About 110 lbs of live rock and 110 pounds of sand. Heater, vinyl hose about 4 feet for syphining the tank, a few five gallon buckets. Turkey baster. That is all I can thing of right now.
Just a note: They have a very good, and active classified board here so you may be able to find some of your equipment right here. Alot of the time the equipment is in good shape, Just once the saltwater bug bites you, you always want to go bigger, and we have to finace our addiction somehow. Check them out.

One last thing. I understand I need live rock. Should I get live sand as well and will you please show me how to set up the live rock. I just need placement ideas. I don't know if there is any one way that is better then another or if you just place it where you think it will look nice. Thank you for all of your help.
