NEW FISH TROUBLE

I added a small Clown Tang to my 125 last night. After the usual pushing around and Territorial confrontations, things have calmed down. But my new fish has a few battle scars. His fins are a little shreaded, and a few lost scales. He also is not eating(no surprise) So treating with ZOE soaked food is out. So I just added ZOE to the water. This is reccomended treatment for inverts, but I now wonder if it will be benaficial to the fish.Any ideas????STEVE

I add my Zoe straight to the water in my tank, and it seems to have worked nice. My mushrooms are more colorful, and my flower coral comes out a lot more and my fish do seem a more vivid color and for some reason my water seems clearer, but it makes green algea grow faster on the glass. (about where it gets added). Hope this helps!

Sorry about your new fish. It wont hurt a thing to add it directly to the tank. Zoe contains Spiralina algae which is supposed to be good for fish. It also lowers the risk of many fish diseases. And depending on how varied your fishes diet is, you may want to use it everyday. Its kind of like taking a multivitamin everyday. Cant hurt. And a little 8oz bottle lasts 3 months or so. Hope this helped.

BTW...One of my product reps gave me 4 tickets to Talladega later this month.
Skybox at the tri-oval. So I guess I'll go. It'll be worth it to see Jeff Gordon lose again.
NAH NAH NAH NAH NAHHHHH!!!

I soak flakes in it daily mostly for my sailfin tang. He has HLLE.But all the fish get it. I think He'll be OK,Just wondered if anyone else uses it this way.YHANKS. STEVE

Hey Mr. Salty,
I use to add Vita-Chem by Boyd directly to the water. It didn't hurt but I stopped only because it would make the skimmer go nuts. I still soak it directly in the frozen foods once or twice a week. I would add the Zoe...at least until the fish gets settled for a couple of weeks...couldn't hurt and could only help.

I can't agree more w/ wrassefan. I use the vita-chem and it says to add it to the water also... I just think it's too expensive to be doing that. Steve, How many hours a day do you run your lights? Cause I don't feed any of my fish seaweed selcts or use vitamins that much and my sailfin doesn't have HLLE. I'm not saying your doing something wrong or anything like that, just curious.. All my LR and glass is just packed w/ aglea. Just a suggestion, if you run your lights longer and get algea growing emensly on everything then you wouldn't have to use vitamins or seaweed selects. I have my lights on timers.

at6am two 30 watt blues come on

at 730am one 40watt daylight and one 40watt blue come on

at noon Metal halites on
5pm MH off
8pm Two 40 watters off
10pm all lights off.
as you can see the lights are on more that most will say they should be. My hippo is the only fish that will touch the algae I have growing in the tank.STEVE

I personally do not like to add vitamins directly to the water. If you are adding it to the food that is the best. Adding it to the water only provides more nutrients for algae.

Also, Do you use a Grounding probe? Stray voltage is believed to be a cause of hlle. Steve why would you add such a delicate type of tang to a tank that is barely 3months old especially after just having an ick problem? A clown tang should only be kept by an expert I hope you have good luck with him.

Stray voltage is the first thing I checked for when HLLE first appeared.I used a multimeter, and none was detected. As I said,I add vitamins to the flake food daily. But the new fish was NOT eating so adding it to the water was an idea to get it into him. I have read nothing about Clown Tangs being any more delicate than any other tang, and adding him into a tank that is curently being treated for ich doesn't sound like that bad of an idea to me.And also, not to be splitting hairs,But the tank is almost five months old NOT barly three mos.And doing quite well. Steve this is a quote out of The Conscientious Marine Aquarist ,The clown tang is a striking but aggressive fish that wounds other tangs with its venomous spines and needs expert care. According to a post you posted on 7-6-00 BIO BALLS???? You stated you had just bought your 125 and were not sure about bio ball use. Now unless they shortened the months your tank just turned 3 months old yesterday, not to be splitting hairs or anything.

I don't think my 2.5in clown is going to do any dammage to the MUCH larger fish I have. Why are you being so argumentative? CHILL OUT.STEVE

I can give you a cheap fix for a grounding rod.
Go to your local bike shop and get a titanium spoke for a bicycle, its the only safe metal to use in your tank(s) that I know of.
Good Luck,
Mr.Limpet

Hey Steve I was nt being arguementive just replying to your statements and I was not really speaking of the clown tang hurting its tank mates as much as it being difficult to keep.

Keep a close eye on all of them. If the fighting doesnt stop in a couple days be prepared to move the new fish out. Some fish will not get along at all. Others learn to tolerate each other. Good luck.STEVE
