Sounds more like aggression. A damsel and a firefish would not mate. I would recommend you take the damsels out, as they always have a tendency to become very hostile and territory to other fish in the tank.

i dont have another tank.could it be because the damsels have been in there a long time alone and they have devoloped a territory

Damsels are territorial by nature. I would try to return them to the LFS or give them to a hobbyist in the area who wants them.

Personally, I'd take the firefish back. While damsels may be aggressive, lots of fish are capable of bullying the firefish. If you keep him, you're going to have to cross a lot of other fish off your list of future tank mates. At least damsels can pretty much go with anything.

I agree with Lion, especially considering your username I am sure you would pick the firefish over the damsel. Now the problem is how to get the damsel out. To help you out you should click on the search button at the top of this screen. Click on the advanced search function and type in something like "catch damsel" or "remove Damsel" ......
HTH and welcome to the boards!

if i get rid of the damsel ,do you think this would be suitable for the firefish.
manderin green dragonet

a purple psudochromis

a yellow wrasse

another firefish

because the manderin dragonet will always be hidingand the purple psudochromis and the wrasse calm and non aggresive.

I added another firefish a week after my first and it didn't work out so well. Of course my original firefish does not hide anywhere and chases my chromis so maybe he was just mean to begin with...and make sure to do a lot of research on the mandarin they are very difficult to keep fed

The psuedo will definitely hate on the firefish, and the wrasse might, too. I don't know if your system is established enough for a mandarin, and if you were going to have more than one firefish it might have been better to add them both at the same time.

You should read-up and look at all the different possiblities. Put a pair of clowns in there in the meantime. They are hardy and get along with most everything. I have a firefish, my tank is peaceful, the blue damsel might not be as aggressive at first, but I wouldn't risk it, pull them out. Your LFS should compensate you for what you paid as long as you use it to your next purchase there. If not, find a new LFS.
There are tons of options, I would start with easy-care, hardy, friendly fish. You don't want to waste a lot of money finding out who is not compatible, they have charts for that. Don't spend more than 30$ on a fish until you have figured it out, get a cleaner shrimp, they are fun to watch and add a new dimension to your tank.
