Not to scare you, but mine jumped out through a small opening on the back of my tank. It might be wise to get a cover if you don't already have one and plug some of the openings on the back where the pump and stuff hang over.

that is something i worry about a little....because i dont have one right now, and the only prob with a top is i have a gravity return fuge, which has pvc running into the top of my tank....which means a normal top wont fit...so i'll have to go get something made i guess....wouldnt want to lose my little guy already!
is there a way to tell between male and female?

That is a great question! I would love to know the answer to that myself. I have two and one seems a little more dominate than the other.
As far as the top goes get some egg crate. It works great. Although mine did jump through that little hole,
it makes it alot harder for them.

I don't know about how to tell if they are male or female. I think my firefish jumped out because he was being chased by an aggressive Clarki clown. If you have peacefull tankmates, I think you can put you mind at ease. But that's not to say that something might startle him and make him jump.

You've already tried my suggestions with Lowes or Home Depot. I think they use them as grates for flourecent lighting. I'm looking at the ceiling here in the office and I see some "eggcrate" that is used as a grate over the air returns on the HVAC system. Maybe check in lighting and HVAC in some of those stores.
