new FREE corals

ok, so i was at this petstore today, went to pic up some crabs to help with the alge prob...and this other guy there starts chattin with me, and we end up talking for a while, and he says to come by his house and he'll give me some corals......of course i cant turn down free...so i go over there and he brings me back a bag with a purple gorgonia, flower pot coral, and a colt coral.....i know very little about each, and am researching as we speak as well....but if anyone can just give some advice from their experience i would really appreciate it....thanks so much everyone!!! if any of this stuff i shouldnt be keep i will take it back or take it to an lfs. but like i said i dont know much about it yet besides what i have seen a little here...and now researching, and wasnt sure what exactly i was getting, so help please

Luke, I know the Gorgonian cannot EVER touch air. Thats what I was told when I got mine. Nice score by the way.

thats great, the guy put it in the bag left the top without water(leaving some out), what will happen?

I was told to never ever let air touch it. When putting it into the tank, submerge the bag completely and pull it out. Yes some bag water will be released but minimal amount. Supposedly if it touches air it will die. I may be wrong, but thats what I was told.
Someone please feel free to correct me if I am in error here.

You sure guys? I know sponges can't touch air...but gorgonians? They are sps corals.
The flowerpot coral will need doses of pyto and direct spot feeding of FINELY chopped meaty foods every three days. The colt coral will be fine with dosings of phyto....it will actually gain a lot of it's nutrients from your lighting. The gorgonian will need to go into an area of very low lighting and very high water flow. If algae starts growing on it, it can be overcome very quickly. The gorgonian will thrive on phyto as well.

First off, gorgornians are NOT sps corals. They are not even a coral. They cannot touch air.

Sea fans, Order Gorgonacea, are colonial Anthozoans anchored on hard substrates, supported by an internal, central horny/wood-like skeleton. They're colonies are covered by a thick "rind-like" skin. Unlike anemones, but like corals, sea fan polyps are interconnected by an internal germ layer (gastrodermis) and mesoglea. This feature explains much regarding how one part can feed and sustain the rest of the colony, and unfortunately how disease can easily spread.
Common genera include Gorgonia, the purple sea fan from Florida/Caribbean, the dried "ornamental" fan skeletons in stores. Corallium is the beautiful red sea fan used in jewelry. Paragorgia, Pterogorgia, and Pseudopterogorgia; and others are often encountered, offered for aquarium use.

Pretty much says that the outer skeleton part is hollow, and the insides are filled with the "gorgonian flesh." The little fan parts that poke out of the holes in the outer skeleton are all connected to the internal flesh, and thus all the little "mouths" feed the same "stomach."
Pretty much the same as most lps, like galaxea for instance.

i don't know about what classification they are in but i have heard that gorgonias shouldn't ever exposed to air but i'm not sure if it true or not. i've just heard it from other sources and i've also heard it about most or all sponges. it is in the profile for SWF section. i think that if this is true only the part that was exposed to air will suffer so if you have coral cutters just whack the branches that you see dying. make sure they are dying though don't just whack pieces off cause the polyps aren't out.
AND i've heard DT's phyto is good. i use kents marine phyto and zooplankton and it works nice. i also dose kents essential elements

ok...and the colt coral is kinda druppy...spelling sorry......is this a bad sign, i know corals can need a day or so most of the time, so i just wanted to ask to make sure

My new colt frag is droopy too, but I have realized that if you lean it the other way, it continues to droop against the foce of gravity....so maybe its not drooping at all.
I think they are fine though and just need time to adjust.
