Oh my gosh!
This thead is awesome! I go to the pet store and I see these cool frogs, but never really thought much about them. I never thought about all the care, maintenance, research, time and money you hafta put into these things. Just like our fish I guess!
That is fascinating! They are SO cute!
I think you need to put venus fly traps in there with them, lol.
Are those rain forest creatures? So cute... did I mention cute? Especially this one...

AWESOME pictures! I would love to walk up to one of those tanks, put my nose on the glass and try and find all the frogs in there.
That yellow and black frog is really COOL!

yes those are egg that dad is guarding in the first picture.
I wish my tank was as easy to care for as these guys.
I have a 29 gal with imitators in it ( about the size of you thumbnail0 I started with 4 of them now I think there is 6 or 7 in there. I can never find them all to get an acurate count.
Thanks for all the good comments guys

Those guys are pretty sweet! I've always thought about housing a pair but never really looked into it (I thought you'd have to buy flies all the time too).
What would be a good colorful "starter frog"? I saw the information you posted on fruit fly cultures but If someone wanted to set up and care for these guys what would the full materials list and cost look like including the culture set-up? Oh and while I'm asking a ton of questions, what would your daily/weekly care and maintainence requirements be for such a set-up? Thanks for the pics!

Yes there is costan ricans in there. Mine go for $30 each.
A good started frog in my opinion would be the auratus ( green and black one in the pics) or Leucomelas ( like the one in my avatar)
They live happily in groups and are very bold ( leucs more than auratus) alot of people say the auratus are shy but mine are out ALL the time. Just be sure to give them plenty of cover ( plants, driftwood and such)
The cost of FF =
Cups =( reusable a couple of times) I buy mine in bulk 500 at a time = .30 each
FF media = roughly $15 ( makes about 20-25 cultures)( or make your own much cheaper)
Excelsior = $5 ( gallon size bag) ( makes about 20-25 cultures)
Brewers yeast = $2 ( some times comes with media)
for roughly $30 you could feed a pair of frogs for about 3-4 months
Moving on to the tank
10 gal tank ( smallest size I would reccomend for 2 frogs) = $10
Glass Top = $12
Back ground ( depending on what kind you want ) = Max $10
Substrate ( including Hydroton) = $15
Leaf litter ( oak or magnolia ) $5 or collect it yourself if you can)
Plants ( these here can get completely out of hand) any where from a couple dollars to many many dollars depending on how elaborate you want to go.
Frogs ( once again depending on what kind you want) all the ones I have pictured range from $30 to $55 ( some frogs can run you about $400- $500 a frog
As for weekly care I feed my adults 3 times a week and mist their tanks on those days also. No maintenance is required on the tanks just a occasional wiping down of the front glass and a plant trimming. I have has tanks set up for 3-4 years and never had to do any cleaning except for the wipe down and trim.
another good thing to get is a culture of springtails ( itty bitty white bugs) after you set up a tank you buy a culture of springtails and flood it with water. Dump the water directly into the substrate and let sit for a couple of week frogless to give them time to establish them selves. Set culture aside and feed it a pinch of fish food once a week. It will keep producing bugs as long as you leave a couple in it.
These bugs act as a CUC for frog poo and decaying leaves..
I am happy to explain anything a little further just ask and I will help as much as i can

What, no Red-eyed African Tree? No frog collection is complete without one.
Amazing collection you have. Thank you for sharing. Keep the pictures coming.

Once again thanks for all the positive feedback!!!!

Thanks for the set-up explanation.
Sounds like a pretty easy set-up but how do you "feed" them? I'm imagining trying to shake fruit flies from a cup, into a tank, and then my wife coming home to a fruit fly invasion... I dont see that going very well.

The lids on the FF cups are a it flexible and the flies are flightless.
get a very tall plastic cup ( like you see at the dollar store)
Open the lid of the culture on one side, hold over the cup and tap the bottom so the flies fall into the cup
Swirl them around to keep them from climbing ( this is why taller is better) and them dust them ( this also keeps them from climbing) and then dump them into the tank.
It is inevitable a few will get out so keep a venus fly trap or another kind of carnivorous plant in the room also and they help take care of the problem.

These pictures are just freakin awesome! WOW what a way to start the day.
OF course what makes this picture is the cats checking them out.

What a great closeup of an absolutley cool frog.

I think this is my favortie picture.

How do they do that?

I really like the one with the cats watching also.
That is when I was moving them into their temp home till I get their bigger tank ready.
I bought them with the plans of reselling them but the longer i have them I think i am going to have to keep them.
I am definately going to have keep some of the albino red eyes.
Atleasy my picture taking skills are getting better

I'm already setting up a dart frog tank. LOL

I kind of looked at your thread and got some ideas from it.
Were you able to convince your folks to let you get the frogs?
