its not necessary, but its better.... do you know what your municipal or well water has in it? is it chlorinated, softened? those are things to avoid,,,, also if you know someone who has a TDS meter and see how bad your water is. It may be cheaper in the long run to buy an RO ir and RO/DI unit to do your water with if they water in your area isnt good......I know in Arlington the TDS was over 200 and is chlorinated...

TDS? is that total dissolved solids?
im an environmental scientist by day, and all i do is water testing. im bringing my DO meter home tonight to check the 02 levels in the tank. same with ph and chlorine from the tap.
my roommates dad has an RO thing, but it takes a weel to make 30 gal. i wanna do this asap.

you can get ones that make 75 gallons per day or so, it also depends on how bad the water quality is on how much output there is....SO what is in your water?

tested the DO today. well, tried to. thought about it....i put my meters in petroleum all day so i couldnt stick it in the tank. then i took a sample of my water and tested it...but in order for my meter to be effective, it needs to have moving water going over it. ill get it workin over the weekend.
on another note, i got my k-4's in today. hooked up one on the end opposite of the overflow box. the thing FLOWS. makes small waves on the surface even when put half way down the glass and slightly angled. i have 2, but i dont know if i want/need to add the other one? its a 6' long tank, 18" deep
