why dont you put your new hard drive into the laptop , install windows and all your drivers and software then transfer the data that you need from your old hard drive (put the old hard drive in the external enclosure)

I agree for me it is a lot easier (unless you have a dumptruck load of songs and no external hard drive) to just install windows clean then transfer your data. That way you start clean and don't have all the junk you can accumulate from the interwebnet thinggy.

Google HDclone. It's great software I use at the office. The only difference in the Pro, Basic and Free version are the transfer rates. IT works with USB devices and is self explanitory. You'll boot to your CD and pick the source and destination drive and start copying.
Like Streb mentioned, sometimes a clean install is best. If you go that route run the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" on your old computer to backup everything, install Windows on the new drive, then run the wizard agin to restore everything.
Good Luck

It should not need formatted but you can always try. Boot into your old hard drive and plug in the external drive. Pull up Disk management and format the new drive. Then see if it will let you clone it.

Go into bios (typically by hitting f8 in start up) make sure that the computer is looking for another hard drive. If you are talking IDEE drive make sure the jumper is set to slave for the time being.
Then it should recognize it.

Let me recap to make sure I understand. You are booted into your old system. The new hard drive is in a USB enclosure and attached to to the PC.
When you go into Disk management (from the rund command type: diskmgmt.msc)
It is not seen? It should show up as Disk 1 on the bottom portion of the screen.
Assuming all this is correct I would recheck your connection of the new hard drive to the enclosure.

This is correct if it is installed in the system but his new drive is in an external USB enclosure.

Do you have any other hard drives around you can put into the USB enclosure and see if they work? This way we can further attempt to isolate the issue.
The issue is either related to drivers, the hard drive, or the enclosure. Do you run windows updates, correct?
