I just wanted to say "Hi" and introduce myself.
I have a 155 gallon mixed reef that has been running about two years and a recently added "large" refugium. My first reef was started in the late 70's and I've been completely hooked ever since. Over the years I've spent a lot of time studying and researching the sand and rock inhabitants, ie. the 'bugs'.
With my current display tank I've steered away from the SPS dominated fore-reef and tried my hand at something a little different.
I've read a lot of your posts and I hope to enjoy interacting with all of you.

Welcome to the board. What are you trying that's a little different? Inquiring minds want to know.

Sounds like a interesting system. I also run a rather large refugium type filtration system...but my reef is only a lil bitty 55 'er...
Do tell what you are doing thats a bit different. :D
Welcome to the board...always nice to see a experiencied reef keeper join us...lots of good folks here.

I'm curious! It's nice to have another member on this board that has been in the hobby before most of the books were written, we'll listen to all of the advice you're willing to share. What exactly is a mixed reef by your definition and do you have any pics for us?

WOW! Thank you for the warm welcome :D
I should have clarified... something new for me, I hope you're not disappointed. I have always picked a specific biotope and attempted to mimic a small piece. In my current system I've tried to blend together a mixture of different environments. For example:

This pic is from near the center of the tank. A couple of SPS up top, LPS near the bottom, moderate light coral in the middle and LOTS of macro algae, a mixed reef.
The refugium is progressing nicely. It's showing signs of increasing populations of worms, amphipods, copepods, even some sand skaters are increasing in numbers. With 2500 pounds of sand it will probably take another couple of months before it's fully functional.

Gasp! I didn't know it could look so natural. How long has your tank been growing together without you moving anything?

Vey nice work Bang Guy, how long has that system been up? It looks like that it may of taken a few years to get it to look that good? I'd be very proud of that tank........

Ok, I'm seeing your cool pics all over threads....just a beautiful tank. How do you keep the calerpa under control. I love seeing it but, I'm afraid of the theory that it will take over...(cheerfully ignoring the fact I have a yellow tang at the moment) ;)

The display upstairs is a 155 bowfront. In the basement is a 50 gallon sump and a 64 square foot refugium.

Wow, no other words can match that feeling when peering into your tank. And can i say, how did you convince your wife to let you do a 64 foot refugium? I don't plan on doing the same but your persuasion methods may come in handy in the future. :D

I think a good question is does your wife even know about the 64 foot refugium?! (kind of hard to hide though!)
