I just started reading your post flush to the garage side wall is the way to go on the inside you might consider angling the inside verticals. The view from the side would not be cutoff then by the 4 in. recess a 45 degree angle will open the view up to all wish I was there I love tearing s##t apart. Also check the top and bottom plate for vertical wiring going up thru the space you pick good luck
