NOT if it is steady.....I keep 2 small 4" fans from Walmart on my tank...blows the heat out....LOL...I think
They don't look bad cause of how I have them positioned.....
I keep one on all the time in the summer...and the other is on the same timer as the lights

YUP....it's fast temp swings you need to watch for.....Most tanks will go up a little during light times anyways....

I'm with meowzer on this one.
I have one of the cool breeze clip on personal fans blowing upward on my halide.(like 7 bucks) My tank stays at a rock solid 78. I have a 175 watt halide with two VHO actinics over a 29 gallon bio cube. No glass either since I run a single ended bulb. My fan is about 2 feet away from the light fixture and tank. Runs 24/7. My bulbs are 7" off the water. I can touch and hold on to the base that the halide screws into.

I agree with Meowzer too. My tank stays around 78-80 (depending on weather) and thats perfectly fine. Sometimes during really hot weeks my tanks temp will gradually rise to 82...but its not fast enough to cause any damage (I have yet to see ill effects with anything). For me though its not the lights...but the weather that causes my temp to rise. I have a fan in my canopy (a computer fan powered by a cell phone charger) and that sucks all the hot air out and it works very well I think. Its really easy to make a fan if you can't find one that you like at the store. The 81 degress is fine...but if you want it lower...def get a fan.

+1. Desk fan on back of aquarium plugged into timer works great. Then the fan comes on automatically when the MH lights come on.
