New Mantis :)

Heya!
I got Nina's mantis yesterday, still having a tough time id'ing it (getting help on a stomatopod site). She told me it hadn't eaten since friday, so while acclimating it i put in some krill--didn't look twice--some chopped up clam, shrimp, scallops, etc. nothing. I realize they eat crabs and snails, so i'll grab some on the way home, but shouldn't it eat just about anything?

I would think so. how big is it. the one I caught a few yrs ago was eating a nass snail, but would eat mysis when by its self in a ten gal. you might try small ghost shrimp. it may only eat at night also

No, he should eat during the day. In my tank I would see him munching with the lights on. I caught him using a cocktail shrimp. Maybe he is just stressed from the trip.

the 20's having a sand storm, so i have him in my fuge right now, in a nicely perferated tupperware container for flow (and prevention of escape!)

no joke, I was watching some videos on mantis, and the biologist would get him to strike anything with a little shrimp paste on the object.

Renogaw, remember me telling you in p.m. that I wanted one for our 10 gallon tank. Well, today I was quite lucky and came across a N. Wennarae, which is what I told you I would probably end up with. Someone sent one to our LFS in place of a pistol shrimp and I walked out of there with a new mantis for just $5. I am so happy and I can't wait untill tomorrow when the lights come on to see how it is doing. We bought it a few blue leg hermits and a few snails to see if it will eat on its own, if not we have some extra shrimp for it. Good luck with your new one, and I hope it does well for you, like I said if it is the Smithii then you are really lucky. From the pictures I saw I still think that might be what it is.

That is so sad. I'm very sorry. I really wanted him to live a long happy life in your tank.
