New Octopus

Here are a couple of pictures of a new Octopus I got this week. He seems to be very shy as he hides in the corner when the flash starts going off. It is amazing how quick he gets around the tank and how his color and pattern change as he moves. Very interesting creature.

couple of questions here. you cant just show pics of an awesome octopus and not give details. How big is it? what size tank? reef or fish only? what else in tank? etc...
I am soooo jealous. I always thought they were the most amazing creatures in the sea. People say make sure the lid is on tight.

He's pretty small, probably 6 inches stretched out. Right now he is living inside my refugium while his new home is still cycling. He has already made a meal of at least 1 snail that I have see. Refugium is sealed up very tight except for 2 probe holes which he has already found. Duck tape was the answer for that. He will be going in a new tank with rock and a few corals to start out with. From what I have read, fish aren't a good idea to keep in the tank with an octopus. I felt kind of stupid sitting on the floor in the basement watching this little guy moving around in the refugium, can't wait till his new home is ready!

looks like a pacific dwarf... very cool indeed.
start hand feeding him some goldfish or shrimp... if he bites you it will only feel like a pinch so dont freak out.. good way to get to know him a little..
oh, and if you want to see him get angry and little spikey things on his back.. show him a reflection of himself... awesome.

How will you have powerheads or even the main place for the water to enter the tank and exit the tank as it goes through yoru refuigum? Since he can crawl inside a powerhead or where the water would shoot out? I'd like to see tank pics of your octopuses new home. I found a LFS that was selling small octopus like that for $30.00 They were only about 2inches in length though.

I ordered this Octopus from SWF.com. Here are a couple of pictures of the sump/refugium he is staying in at the moment. Water flows in on the right through a spray bar and drains towards the center section through a series of teeth. I'm pretty sure he is big enough not to be able to get through the teeth. Top of the refugium is completely covered with the light sitting on top.

I was thinking the same about the refugium! How big do these octopi get??
The lid probably has to be attached; I would think octopi (or is it octopusses?) have the muscle to remove it if they can.

They don't even need to remove it. They just need to get it up enough to squeeze their body through, which isn't a tough task for an octopus.
I've always wanted one of those guys. I plan on getting one eventually when I have my own place and can set up multiple tanks. Good luck with him!

Theyre a ton of fun to have. He'll amaze you with how smart he can be; youd almost think that he knows hes in a display tank! After they get used to the tank and realize they're the king, theyre gonna be a lot less shy. They will often investigate your fingers as you clean the tank, and will frequently stick themselves onto the front of the glass and peak at you around their tenicles. here's an example of what i mean, this was the second octo i had: http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f71/97GLT/g.jpg
I had some luck with keeping a clown fish, but only becuase he had an anemone to hide in. Everything else just dies, its such a

to deal with; no hermits, no snails, no shrimp, no nothing, everything is eaten.
Im sure you know enough, so i wont unload all the precautions and whatnot, but if you need a hand just ask
They're way too much fun, they should be illegal or something
