get a lee's medium gravel vac and use the tall tube to replace the stock one on that skimmer, get a better pump and run two 2inch airstones on it... it really improves the performance of the oceanic skimmer.
stock the oceanic skimmer sucks pretty bad, but with those mods.. mine skimmed pretty dry compared to stock.

I use this skimmer on my BC29 and I actually like it a lot. I havent done anything to it and IMO it skims pretty well. However I am going to try those mods and see how different it is. Thanks for the tip...

can someone explain to me the process of a skimmer?
It is the process nutrient export from your system through micro bubble adsorption.
Basically your water is forced into a tube with all these micro bubbles. Excess nutrients/proteins stick to these micro bubbles, in other words, the micro bubbles adsorb (not a typo) these particulates and move them to the top of the skimmer where they are released into your collection cup. That is as basic as I know how to explain it.

So by reducing the protein you are reducing the nitrates? does the excess food qulify as proteing matter?

Yes. Protein as a type of excess nutrient but there are many others. And yes excess food does qualify however it wont be exported through your skimmer in large chunks. These are small particulates broken down, and roaming through your water column.
