as far as cycling the tank goes... you dont need damsels or grocery store shrimp. give it about 2 weeks, and then start ghost feeding the tnak daily for a week to get it to spike.

That works too. The bet way to cycle a tank is to put some live rock in there. If it is uncured then it will cycle the tank for you while it cures. If it is cured then the bacteria spreads to the other surfaces of your tank. You will need to ghost feed a little so the bacteria has an ammonia source. There is no reason to ever cycle with fish. It burns their gills something fierce. Your LFS recommended damsels because they can take the most abuse. It is sad. I know you didn't mean to hurt the fish. You were doing what you were told to do.
