new reef tank

I have a 55 gal tank which was started on January 3rd. I added 40 lbs of live sand, 20 lbs of regular sand, and 10 lbs of GARF grunge. I also have 50 lbs of aragocrete rock (not live). I saw just a tiny bit of brown on the surface of the sand and added 5 red leg hermits, 5 blue leg hermits, 1 Margarita snail, 2 Nassarius snails, and 2 astrea snails on the 17th. Am I suppose to be seeing some kind of algae growth cause I'm not seeing any signs of life growing on anything...? Also, my nitrates are high--should I be running my skimmer?

If your nitrates are high and Amonia and nitrites are 0 then that is about right. Sounds like it has completly cycled. Nitrates are what you are left with at the end of the cycle. Water changes will reduce nitrates once you add fish a refugium will help also.

I was thinking that the live sand and grunge would seed the rock. (?)
