Hey All....
After setting up a new reef tank to be....
how long after the water, salt, and live sand is added,
can one add the live rock safely directly to the tank...?
Everything mentioned above was set-up a few days ago
and we did not add any fish or live rock yet....
Is the live rock from swf.com...cured LR ?
PS....fixed my caps lock...sorry for the prior inconvienence !!!
Thanks in advance...
Regards...

well, if u just set it up and theres nothing living in it exept baceria and its cycling, i would think that its safe to put lr in wenever u wanted. it should cycle ur tank faster. i dont think it matters that its cured wen ur puting it in a new cycling tank, unless ur afraid of hitch hikers

you can put in liver rock whenever you put live sand in, usually 24-48 hours after the dry snad is in and the water is mixed and up and running....you just wnat to be sure that your salinity and pH are stable, because if not, you could shockand kill all the life in bothe the rock and sand.....rock that is cured, will help your tank cycle faster, while rock that is uncured, will take a little longer to cure in tank, but is all part of the cycling proces anyway..buy cured if you can!
good luck

I agree with the others. Live rock can be added at this point assuming water is at proper ph and salinity. Since no fish/live stock, it shouldn't matter if cured or uncured IMO. Again, my opinion... don't waste $$$ on buying cured rock at this point particulary if you are buying from an online place like here. The shipping time will cause the rock to have some die off anyway, which will be the same as un-cured. Buy more uncured rock for the same price as cured.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hey All....
Thank you for your responses....
We have a 125 gal. FOWLS and dead corals and
my son wanted a reef tank, so we did a 37 gal. and
wasnt sure when it was safe enough to add the
LR...right now the salinity is 1.027 and we will test the
ph tomorrow....thanks for reminding me....
As far as QTing....we will QT the fish but add the corals
directly to the tank...is this correct?
(of course, after the tank is fully cycled)
Thanks much....

1) I think your first (main) question was answered, but just to add: this is the perfect time to add what you can afford to help the cycle along (cured or uncured).
2) IMO, the salinity is a little high, mine just got there over the last few weeks due to evaporation and no way to get water for top offs, yesterday I dropped it to 25 and my fish and corals looks much better.
3) Be patient on the corals (give your tank a few months or more after the cycle), and yes the only thing that needs QT is the fish (inverts, coral, LR, etc there is no need for it, these cant hold/carry disease). HTH
OH and
4) I wish I could blame my son for another tank, but he is only pushing 2 LOL :D

In my opinion.
If you're going to be adding live rock to the display tank - get cured live rock.
If you're going to get uncured live rock because of lower cost, then cure it in a separate plastic tub. Cure if for several weeks until the crap dies off, remove any dead plants, sponges and other organic die off.
Doing this in your display tank will foul the water horribly.
People do it both ways - but I find that curing it in a separate container is better.
It's up to you though.

Hey Guys....
Thanks for the info....
Is the live rock from swf.com...cured or uncured?
CLARKII....My son is 15 and this all started when he was
probably around your sons age...he has always been
obsessed with the fish tanks...when he was old enough
to talk, he used to walk around with the book
"Saltwater Aquarium Fishes" and we had to put it in his
bookbag when he went to school so he could read it
during snack time....no kidding...LOL...thats all he use to talk
about to everyone...he knew the names of all the fish....
great hobby for all including kids....keeps them focused
in the right direction....

Rock, hardly recognized you in lower case;)
Congrats on the reef tank setup. I'm sure it will be great. Most LR shipped as "cured" will still have some dieoff. I've ordered from a couple places, not here, and they were about the same as far as dieoff is concerned.
Let us know how it goes and of course, pictures!
