Steve, I agree with Kim. You dont have to, but running a sump is sometimes easier, and if you have stand, more attractive. You dont see the skimmer, and the heater and what not in the tank.
As far as running with a filter alone, I dont have a lot of experience, but it has been my assumption through all of the reading I have done, that a protien skimmer is essesntial. So in my opinion running your filter and a skimmer would be okay on your 50 gal. Any bigger than that I would get a sump though.

So basically the Fluval is used to run carbon and phosphate remover thru the tank. I been reading that the LR and LS will do most of the filtration biologically and the addition of the skimmer will enhance performance.
I should just break down and get that Tenecor tank and berlin filt. system they offer as a package deal.
thanks,

that is true about the LR and LS doing most of the filteration... if you dont have your system overloaded. which we all tend to do. I have just a simple filter sock which my water comes down from the tank into, then into the sump and protien skimmer and is pumped back to the tank. I just have nylon socks of carbon and a nitrate remover just sitting in the bottom of the sump. and my tank has its occasional problems, but we have never had anything seriously wrong.
It is my opinion if you have a chance to go for the sump now, do it. That way after you set up and wished you had one, you wont regret it.

Have you ever seen that combo that tenecor is selling? What do you guys think? Is the Berlin system pretty good or do you have a better company to go with.
