I have torn down my 150 and started from scratch again for three reasons.
1. I used tap water (thanks to LFS advice)
2. I used a combonation of CC and LS. (thanks to LFS again)
3. I have no live stock nor live rock, so now was the time to fix this.
Boy oh boy was sifting that LS out of the CC with a pool skimmer the most unfun thing I've done in a long time. lol. I've done research and decided to do a 2 inch sand bed, live rock and upgrade my lighting to MH.
Back on track. I got my Reefkeeper Typhoon 3 in today woohoo!
Here it is.

I upgraded the y splitter to a brass fitting bc the one that came with the system was cheap.

this thing was junk

Okay, any advice from what you see veterans? I think I have a decent set up w/ an auto top off storage system. Let me know if you see anything
My tap was 285 tds and now with this bad boy its 0! woo hoo

thanks a lot. For a newbie I think its pretty decent. I'm not one for lugging buckets of water around so using the power head w/ 30' of clear hose is a lot nicer option for water changes. This should make life easier.

what is the ratio of waste water to RO water? is it 3:1. I was trying to calcualte if its more expenisve to buy the RO from my LFS at .75/gallon or but an RO/DI and incur the water bill attached to making your own water.

Ok... I am feeling dumb..
I just set up a 55 Gal tank that I purchased from the LFS.
I used Tap Water and removed the chemicals as instructed.
WHAT should I have used? SO far I have killed 9 fish.. Only one left to go.. sigh...
I did a total water change this time and reset it up.
I use the filter hanging on the side.... Bad idea?
I have crushed coral in the bottom too.. Bad idea?
I have had several tell me tonight that I need to go with live rock to cycle the tank up....
Advice?

why in the world would you put 9 fish in a brand new tank that hasnt been cycled ! thats really wanting to throww your money away. If your LFS said it was ok to do this i would never go back there again. you need to cycle your tank first. what kind of tank are you starting reef or fowlr? also you should be using sand .

It is about 3 to one, yes. I go through drinking water like crazy, plus my tank is too big to go with jugs of water at a time, but thats just me. Whatever works.

RO/DI water , but if its a FO, you can get away with what you did. although eventually you should switch to a RO/DI setup.

Do a full cycle first, and don't use fish, use a peeled raw cocktail shrimp from the grocery store. (full cycle = ammonia and nitrite spike, then fall to 0 and nitrates slowly build up.)
I use the filter hanging on the side.... Bad idea? All a matter of opinion. Useable, yes.
I have crushed coral in the bottom too.. Bad idea? Again, opinion. After all the reading i did, I switched to a sand bed.
I have had several tell me tonight that I need to go with live rock to cycle the tank up.... Live rock will ease the cycle. I too am adding live rock and sand for better biological filtration.
